Are bed sores preventable?!

Question: Are bed sores preventable!?
in elderly persons in nursing homes, can bed sores be prevented!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
Yes they can!. Our hospital uses something called the Braden Scale for predicting pressure sore risk!. I'm not exactly sure how it works, but it is effective if followed correctly!. I believe it involves turning patients in bed every so many hours!. Hope this helps!Www@Answer-Health@Com

There are certainly a lot of things that can be done to help prevent them, and things that should be done- to prevent them happening!. A lot of it can be helped just by getting people up out of bed and changing positions regularly!. There are very few patients that are really totally bed ridden full time, and those people should be on a special mattress to rotate them nd eliminate pressure spots!. A patient with restricted mobility should be helps to turn and move at least every hour or two at the most!. You can't prevent them all, but you sure can prevent most!. If you visit a nursing home and find most folks in the beds, and lots of bed sores, you need to find another facility- because that one isn't providing good care at all!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

They can be prevented with the use of movement and where the patient is bed bound and recieving palliative care then a special air matress can be used!.

In an ideal world yes, but!.!.!. the matresses have waiting lists and are expensive to run so may homes only have a couple!.

I would say that to prevent them is easy if you have enough money and without that then no!. However, i have worked as a nurse and if you are vigilent and all the staff watch for them then as soon as you see one starting you can take measures to treat it quickly before it takes hold and becomes a nightmare!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

It's very hard cos they are caused by pressure of the body pressing in one place all of the time, they try and turn the person but at the end of the day you need the person out of bed and mobile!. I know this is not always possible!.

Some places try and put pieces of sheepskin to try and cushion the area effected!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Train them to sleep on their feet!. Penguins do it, and by herding together they also keep warm, killing two birds with one stone sort of thing Look at the laundry bills and the space you would save on bedrooms!. In fact it might be a better idea just to herd them all off to Antartica!.They will get the hang of it much quicker by living with their teachers!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Yes, by regularly turning the person, and helping them to get out of bed and sit in a chair as much as possible!. You can also get special beds with air mattresses that help relieve the pressure that causes bed sores!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Keep turning them!.

So they don't stay in the same position all the time!.

It would be worth investigating a different type of matress, maybe a water bed, as the loading area is different!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

yea get out of the bedWww@Answer-Health@Com
