Vascular dementia?!

Question: Vascular dementia!?
I recently posted a question on here asking about Alzheimers as we suspected this is what my Grandad had!. However, the doctor has told us he has vascular dementia!. What is it, is it similar to Alzheimers!? He has been in hospital from a urinary infection and is getting moved to an infirmary shortly, in the social workers words "to give my Nan a break from looking after him"!. What are infirmary's like and how long will he be in there if he has this sort of dementia!? Thank you!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
Vascular demetia has very similar symptoms to Alzheimer's disease, and a similar prognosis!. Many people suffering from one disease or the other cannot be accurately diagnosed because they are so similar!. You should Google vascular demetia to find out more!.
I expect the infirmary will be fine, and the staff will have a lot of experience of taking care of patients suffering from dementia!. However, it might be a good idea to think about whether your grandad will need extra care when he returns home!. Whether this is needed depends on what he needs help doing and what your grandma is able and confident to do for him!.
I doubt he'll be there for more than a week or two; part of the reason he is there will be to assess what he is able to do, which can't be done until he recovers from the UTI (having an infection can cause confusion in older people, so any assessment can't be accurate until he's well)!.
If you have any questions, there's no reason why you can't ask your grandad's doctor, or ask your grandma to ask for you!. They should be happy to explain anything to you!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Vascular Dementia is caused by blockages in the brains blood supply which causes the dementia!.
It is a progressive disease!. (most common type is MID-which is where the person has "mini-strokes" that cause damage to the cortex of the brain)
Most people who have vascular dementia also have cardiovascular disease!. The risk factors associated with vascular dementia, therefore, are those associated with cardiovascular disease!. These include: high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, a family history of heart problems, disease in arteries elsewhere in the body, and heart rhythm abnormalities!. Lifestyle factors like being overweight or smoking can contribute to the risk, as well!.
Individuals with vascular dementia or any other type of dementia should be encouraged to participate in their daily routine, and engage in physical and social activities for as long as possible!. Fortunately, there are support groups for caregivers, research studies evaluating medication for improving mental function, and Day Centers that provide activities and socialization for patients!.

If you are looking to give your Nan a break, I'd suggest getting him involved with one of the day centers in your area!.
Good Luck!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
