Answers:
yes yes yes!. My daughter and he dad have both been trough this!. Ingrown nails are actually hereditary! And you cant just clip them out!. You will probably need a referral from your PCP (primary care doc) but it is a very simple procedure!. They begin by lifting the shin away from the nail at the cuticle and they (they numb it first!!) put a chemical down the side of the toe that actually kills that part of the ail so it will not grow back!. It does not look any different from a normal nail once it is healed(to give you an idea of ho simple it is, my daughter was 7 when she had hers done (and she is a BABY!!) and was running with tennis shoes the next day)Www@Answer-Health@Com

Yes he really does need to see a doctor, because it's infected and the toenail won't go away on it's own!.!. but there are things he can do for it in the meantime!.

Have him soak the foot in warm soapy water several times a day, adding something like Phisoderm or surgical scrub to the water!. ( ask your pharmacist)
Rinse well and pat dry, dab on peroxide with a q-tip and if at all possible, tuck a small bit of cotton under the edge of the nail that's sticking into the "meat" of his toe!. It will hurt, but it will help lift up the bit of nail that's digging in and hopefully encourage the nail to grow *out* rather than in!.!.!.
If at all possible, have him wear sandals and allow the area to breathe - so that means no tight-toed shoes, or socks either!.

It may work - or it may not!. I had a chronic ingrown toenail for 18 years, and I finally had the doctor remove that side of the nail!.!.!. and have never had any problems since!.

I KNOW how painful it can be, so I hope this helps !Www@Answer-Health@Com
