Question: What causes a lung to collapse!?
My friends brother had recently gone into surgery cuz his lung collapsed!. I Believe he has asthma but would that have anything to do with it!?!?help please this scares me!!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Yes it is possible!. There are several different ways for a person to get a collapsed lung but it is usually caused by another primary condition!. In the case of an asthmatic person their lungs can become so inflamed(swollen) that his or her airway can be completely closed off!. When that happens, the air that is trapped inside the lung is absorbed into the body and the lung collapses!. It isn't likely that they would use surgery to re-inflate his lung because there are medications that can very quickly bring the swelling back down and allow air back into his lung!. If you want to read up a little more on it the doctors call this one "obstructive atelectasis"!.
