There are many types of lung cancer, all progress differently!. Some are faster growing, some are slower!. How quickly a pt subcumbs to their disease really depends on the type and how involved it is!. Some are more likely to spread to other areas of the body (typical areas for metastasis are liver, bone and brain for small cell lung cancer)!. Depending on where the cancer is located in the lung may factor into the types of symptoms!. ie: If the cancer is close to a bronchial tube, there may be more difficulty with breathing!. It can be common for patients to have increased production of phlegm/sputum!. Has your father recenly quit smoking!? Sometimes when a person has quit, they have increased phlegm as the lungs clear themselves out!. If he has been a smoker, he may have a form of COPD that can cause increased phlegm!.
Some people may have pain with their cancer, some may not!.
Has your father had a biopsy of his cancer!? That is key in determining the course of treatment, and in being able to give you an idea on what to expect in the progression of your dad's disease!. You've mentioned that your dad's cancer is not operable!. If he does not wish to undergo chemotherapy, he may wish to look in to what is called "pallative care"!. This could include something such as radation to the site of the lung cancer!. This won't be a cure, but can alter the growth of the cancer, and relieve pressure if the mass is pressing against sensitive areas!. It can also alleviate coughing if the cough is due to the cancer!.
And, even if your father does not wish to pursue chemo, he should still follow through with meeting with his onchologist, or the doctor that diagnosed the cancer!. They will be a great source of information for your dad and family, and they can monitor the progression of the disease!. Your dad will want to establish and maintain a relationship with a doctor that can follow, and advise when necessary!. I wish you and your dad luck!. I hope you are successful in getting him to an onchologist, and if so, go with him!. Two sets of ears are always better than one!Www@Answer-Health@Com

His health is going to fail quickly if he does not seek treatment!.
Lung cancer pts have very high risk of metastatic disease to the brain, liver, and bones!.
You dad could have brain mets and not realize it!. He should not be driving a car!. He may have bone mets which causes intense pain!. He could have liver mets which will make him intensely sick eventually!.
He may go a few weeks or months with no problems, but its temporary!.
Sounds like your dad is afraid!. His survival rate for 1 yr is less than something like 5%!.
Good luck and my prayers go out to you and your family!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

sorry man

you should take your father to the doctor, for investigations, he must be on treatment which could be surgical if localized and then continue on chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy

if metastasis seen then chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy

my grandfather had ca lung and was localized and he underwent surgery and chemo and radiotherapy and that was 6 years ago and he is now fine and in good health

wishing to your father the bestWww@Answer-Health@Com
