Answers:
You have been given a lot of misinformation here!.

Here are some facts:

It is very likely that your chance of getting breast cancer is no greater than if nobody in your family had had it!.

Only 5-10% of breast cancer cases are hereditaty; the rest are random!.

Breast cancer that 'runs in families' is much rarer than many people seem to think!.

Hereditary breast cancer is caused by a faulty gene!. You stand a 50% chance of inheriting the faulty gene if one of your parents carries that gene (although that does not mean you will definitely get cancer) !. It does NOT skip a generation!. So in your case, your grandmother's cancer would have had to be due to one of the faulty genes, and she would have had to pass that gene on to your father, who in turn passed it on to you, for you to be at increased risk of breast cancer!.

There is a 90+% chance that your your grandmother's cancer was not due to one of the faulty genes, in which case you are not at increased risk of breast cancer!. If it was, but your father has not inherited the gene, you are not at increased risk of breast cancer!.

So really the information you need is whether your grandmother's cancer was due to one of the faulty BRCA genes!. If it was you need to find out about screening for you and your dad!.

The same applies to your mother's side!. Your mother would have to be carrying one of the BRCA genes, which she had passed down to you, for you to be at increased risk!. As neither she nor your maternal grandmother have had breast cancer, it seems unlikely!. Your great aunt's breast cancer was proably random rather than genetic, like 90+% of breast cancers!.

When I was diagnosed, my oncologist was able to reassure me that my breast cancer was not genetic and that members of my (largely female) family were not at increased risk!.

You don't say how old your grandmother and great aunt were when they were diagnosed with breast cancer; as with most cancers, the older you are at diagnosis the less likelihood there is that the cancer is genetic!. Cancers diagnosed after the age of 50 are much less likely to be hereditaryWww@Answer-Health@Com

Your chances of getting breast cancer are probably much higher than the average woman's!. It is genetic and it does not matter which side of the family it is found in!. It can pass from either side!. If you are really concerned you should speak to your doctor and possibly an oncologist!. There is no point dreading something that you can't do anything to stop (absent a complete mastectomy)!. Good luck!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Hi,
Firstly !.!.!. you need to take into consideration that you are genetically related to them, and because they have had breast cancer you have a CHANCE of getting it yourself (whether you are a male OR female)!. This is something just "in your genes"!. You may not have it yet, but you may have inherited a genetic factor that may have you venerable to getting it yourself!. This does not mean you will definitely have it!. You can go to a doctor who will test and screen you for it if you are concerned!.
On a lighter side, you can try avoiding it with a healthy diet and by avoiding things that expose you to developing cancer (i!.e!. smoking, xrays and too much sun being some of the factors)!. Make sure you do a self check on yourself often!.!.!. check yourself for abnormal lumps - an advice a nurse gave me!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

truthfully there is no guaranttee either way!.
Women who have a family history of relatives with
breast cancer ARE at higher risk!. However, some women
never get the disease!. Also, some women who have a lot
of relatives with the disease NEVER get it !.
Cancer is VERY unpredictable!.
Just make sure you get yearly doctor exams!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I'm so sorry about your Grandma!.

How old are you!?
Breast cancer runs in my family too, and my dad made me drink soy milk until I was 18 because it's supposed to act against breast cancer!.

It's possible you might get it when you're older, but not necessarily!. Just to be on the safe side, eat and drink lots of foods with anti-oxidants and stay healthy!. When you get older, make sure you go to the doctor regularly and watch out for possible signs!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

There is an increased chance that you may, but there are many women who never get breat cancer even if their mom has had it!. There are many genetic tests right now and if you are concerned go talk with your physician and see if there is something you can do now to help ensure you do not get it!. Eating right and staying healthy is also a big plus!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

About one in 7 older women get it!. If she got it when she was older, chances are it's not the hereditary kind!. If she got it in her 30's or 40's it's a different story!. An aunt with it also doesn't mean much!. If it's your mother or sister that is more significant!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
