Answers:
gosh this si horrible cause you dont' say what kind you have!? there are many kinds if you are taking lantus i would take maybe 40 units and see how that does you can check every 30 minutes or so if you are taking humalog i would take about 16 and wait 15 minutes and check if it doen'st come down i would call ems!. you know that you can go into coma with it being high it depends!. take care or shock!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Woah! Some of the reactions you're getting from people are shocking!. Yes, 419 is pretty high, but I dont think its diabetic coma/trip to the ER kind of high!. If you're having trouble getting it to come down with the insulin, then yes an ER trip probably wouldnt be a bad idea!. You shouldnt be taking advice for how much insulin you should take to come down from a high blood sugar over the internet because every diabetic is different and reacts to his/her insulin differently!. If my blood sugar was 419 and I took 15 units of Humalog, I'd be heading for a low!. If you dont have a sliding scale, you probably should have tested every hour and taken a few units of humalog every hour until your blood sugar came down!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

1!. Are you a type I or type II diabetic!?

2!. Have you called your doctor!? Your doctor will give you the most appropriate insulin ratio to counteract the high blood sugar!.

3!. How long has your blood sugar been this high!? (1 hour, 2 hours, one day!? etc!.)

4!. Depending on the type of insulin you inject, it can take up to one hour to lower your blood sugar only 50 units (I would recommend a "short acting" insulin)!. It also depends on how much food you've eaten, what type of food, your body's metabolic rate, etc!.

I am a Type I diabetic and have had blood sugars this high before on many occasions!. My doctor and I have set up a system to take one unit of insulin for every 50 units that my blood sugar is over 150!. For example, if I were at 400 I would take 5 units of insulin and then check my blood again in an hour!. BUT THIS IS AN AMOUNT I'VE WORKED OUT WITH MY DOCTOR'S SUPERVISION!. Also, I am on the insulin pump, which is much different than a person who takes various insulin injections throughout the day!.

Also, this high of a blood sugar means that you should be either eating ice chips/drinking water because of the possiblity of dehydration!.

Also, I would highly advise calling your doctor, even if it is after hours, any advice on insulin from someone who does not know you, could result in a plummeting blood sugar, which could possibly put you into a coma!.

Typically, you want your blood sugar to go down at about 100 units per hour!. So from 400 to 300 should take about an hour and so on!. Don't try and inject a lot of insulin at once!!

Be sure to have someone drive you if you decide to go to the ER!!!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Most insulin sliding scales will say to call the doctor for blood sugar over 400!. Call your doctors office!. There should be a message letting you know where to call to get ahold of the on-call doctor!. Have them paged and find out exactly how much insulin you should administer!. They may want you to go to the ER to make sure everything is alright or they may just have you make an office apointment for the next few days!.

DON'T DON'T DON'T take extra LANTUS without the advice of your doctor!Www@Answer-Health@Com

I can't believe some of the stupid answers you are getting!. People should keep quiet if they don't know what they are talking about!. 419 is high, but you are in no danger of going into a coma!. If you are on Humalog, you will need about 16 units to correct your sugar to 120!. If you take your insulin right after you eat, it may prevent a lot of these highs for you!. Good luck!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

You don't fool around with self-diagnosing on how much insulin to take!. Make an appointment with your doctor!. Your blood sugar is probably so high because of what you're eating!. Start taking care of yourself properly!.

And I doubt your count is that high!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

at this point you dont need to take any insulin, you need to get to a hospital this is almost at the rate of a diabetic coma!. My whole family are diabetics, trust me!.!.!.!.!.!.you need to be seen by a doctor and soon!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Wow, that's pretty high!. However, taking 15 units is a lot!. You need to monitor it really closely and make sure that you don't go too low!. Hope you feel better!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

call the er!.!. they can tell you!.!.!.
and watch what you are eating!.!.drink lots of water!.!. Just water!.!. that will help decrease it too!.!. But not by much!.!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I'd suggest going to the emergency room and letting them bring it down for you as that is quite high!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

You should really consult professionals instead of the internet!.!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

GO TO THE ER NOW!! HIGH BLOOD SUGAR CAN LEAD TO DIABETIC COMA!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
