Question: Whats the highest blood sugar level a person could possibly get before they go iinto coma!?
Answers:
There is no right answer to this question, I have seen patients in HHNK (usually older Type 2 Diabetics)with a blood sugar of 1400 (yes thats 1400) and talking to me, and people with a sugar of 350 and gorked out of their mind!. Everybody reacts different!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

It's not the blood sugar level itself, but the ability or lack of ability on the part of the diabetic to use the sugar that leads to coma, which occurs in a condition called diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA)!. Blood sugar levels rise in diabetics because they cannot get the sugar molecules across the cell membranes and into the cells, where the glucose molecules are used!. Insulin helps to facilitate this movement of sugar molecules across the cell membranes!.

In type I diabetes, there is a lack of insulin, and in type II diabetes, there is resistance to insulin, with a decrease in insulin production occurring later in type II diabetes!. Either form can result in DKA, but it occurs more frequently in type I diabetics!.

DKA may develop ion some diabetics when the blood sugar level is below 500, while others don't develop it at all!. Those who are most resistant to developing DKA are those with very little body fat!. The reason for this will become apparent as I explain more!.

What causes the coma is the development of DKA, a result of the body using fats rather than sugar for energy!. The fats are metabolized to ketones, and in association with this, the diabetic develops an increased level of acidity in the blood stream!. This severe acidosis is what leads to the coma!.

Treatment of DKA usually involves giving an insulin drip until the blood sugar level is corrected, accompanied by large amounts of fluids and potassium, because patients with DKA are usually very dehydrated and depleted of potassium!. Once the blood sugar level is corrected, the administration of insulin is continued, but glucose is added to the intravenous fluids, and this combination is continued until the acidosis is also corrected!.

I hope this answers your question!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

It really differs with each person!. My friend's brother was 1200 and he died on the way to the hospital!. Thankfully they were able to revive him!. He had no idea he was diabetic until then!. Some people react badly at much lower levels, though!. I know I was 500-600 before I was diagnosed and I was perfectly fine and worked every day!. Other people have a hard time around 300-400!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

It depends on what blood sugar level they have been accustomed to!.

I have seen people become disoriented at 500, and I have also seen people walking around at 1300!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

If it gets over 300, that is a real cause for concern!. I have seen them as high as 500 without the person being in a coma though!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
