I take 100mcg of thyroid medication!. I did not have it for several months!. I became very ill, my armpits turned black, my face swelled to twice the normal size , my heart rate decreased and blood pressure dropped to 85/50!. I went to the doctor and was told I was only days if not minutes from a coma!. You can also have what is called a thyroid storm!. There is a lot of information on the Internet about it!. Believe me, the people who do not take it WILL have problems eventually- ask any doctor and he/she will tell you the same!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Levothyroxine, a thyroid hormone, is used to treat hypothyroidism, a condition where the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone!. Without this hormone, the body cannot function properly, resulting in poor growth, slow speech, lack of energy, weight gain, hair loss, dry thick skin, and increased sensitivity to cold!. When taken correctly, levothyroxine reverses these symptoms!. Levothyroxine is also used to treat congenital hypothyroidism (cretinism) and goiter (enlarged thyroid gland)!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

It depends!. Your thyroid would suddenly have to start working much harder, and the demands your body would be putting on it could -- over time -- be damaging to it!. That effect would take time to develop!.

Your thyroid might not be able to produce enough of the hormones it's supposed to make (which the levothyroxine replaces), in which case you might more immediately experience lower energy, feeling chilly or sluggish, and a reduced metabolism!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I have no thyroid, so if I stopped, eventually I would die!. if you are hypo, then you would get leg cramps, constipated, cold, fuzzy thinking, etc!. but it doesn't happen overnight!.!.!.it takes people 3 to 6 weeks without to have their tsh levels get so high----we call it hypo hell!. and of course if you have hashimotos, and stop taking it, it means it is not working to stop your hashimotos from getting worse, so eventually the thyroid would be non functional and you would need more meds (a stronger dose)!. and since I had thyroid cancer, I would be actually encouraging the cancer to grow back again, since my dose is suppressing the cancer!. so generally, it is great we have the meds!. do you take them the right way!? on an empty stomach, first thing in the morning with just water, no food for 1/2 hour at least, and calcium and iron pills at least 4 hours later!. good luck and good health!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Many symptoms can be caused by a low level of thyroxine!. Basically, everything 'slows down'!. Not all symptoms develop in all cases!.

Symptoms that commonly occur include: tiredness, weight gain, constipation, aches, feeling cold, dry skin, lifeless hair, fluid retention, mental slowing, and depression!.
Less common symptoms include: a hoarse voice, irregular or heavy menstrual periods in women, infertility, loss of sex drive, carpal tunnel syndrome (which causes pains and numbness in the hand), and memory loss or confusion in the elderly!.
However, all these symptoms can be caused by other conditions, and sometimes the diagnosis is not obvious!. Symptoms usually develop slowly, and gradually become worse over months or years as the level of thyroxine in the body gradually falls!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
