Other contributors are right!. In the US, all drugs have both a brand name and a generic name- some may even have multiple brand or generic names!. The brand name belongs to the first company that discovered the drug, did the tests/studies, got the approval from the FDA, and initially sold the drug!. As soon as they discover a worthwhile compound, the company will apply for a patent that is good for 17 years!. They sell their compound under a brand name that is usually easy to remember so they can do heavy advertising and you will ask your doctor for it (most of you know what Valtrex is from the commercials and if you ever had warts you'd probably ask your doctor if Valtrex would be good for you)!. The patent is applied for early in the drug research process and as soon as they get an FDA approval, they begin manufacturing!. Who knows how long is left on the 17 year patent at that point so that is why they do huge amounts of advertising and charge outrageous prices to make a profit!. Keep in mind that in the US, it takes BILLIONS (not millions) of dollars for a new drug to gain an FDA approval!. A handful of drugs get an FDA approval while thousands do not every year (as it should be)!. The company invests huge amounts of money to do research and testing!. Yes, the brand company will makes huge profits and charge unfair prices but that's what we get in a private (not government) system for producing and researcing new drugs!. It is a part of what drives a company's incentive to fork out the billions to do it anyway!.

Now, there are a couple of reasons why you get switched from brand to generic at the pharmacy when the generic becomes available!. The brand goes off patent and the generic comes out!. Unless you or your doctor specifically say that brand is medically necessary, the pharmacy will dispense generic!. Many times, if you have drug insurance, they will force you to switch from brand to generic because they will not pay for brand at all!. You don't know they force you because this communication is done between the pharmacy and the insurance company when the pharmacy is trying to bill the insurance (that's all done by computers within seconds and the pharmacy will get a rejection and then the message will say that the insurance wants generic)!. If you have a good pharmacy, they will tell you this when you pick up your medicine!.

In the US (because I don't know the laws in other countries), generics must go through extensive testing and gain an FDA approval that they are equivalent in efficacy, safety, and side effects to the brand!. Not just any company can make a generic!. All generics receive a rating and that rating is what pharmacies use to decide to sell a generic!. A rating of A/B means the drug is bioequivalent to the brand!. I haven't ever seen a generic sold in all the pharmacies I've worked in that wasn't A/B!. You can expect anything from the generic that you do the brand!. A generic will have the exact same active ingredient- that's why it'll do the same job!. The only differences you will find are the other stuff in the pill that stabilize it, keep it together, help it melt, etc!. Every company has their own formulas and they usually don't share those!. Oh, and there is usually a big cost difference ;)

So feel safe in using generics!. Some people will insist that brands work better for them!. I contribute that more to the placebo effect!. If you really think it makes a difference, you will perceive it!. I, myself, use generics all the time and recommend it all the time!.

I came back to make an edit after reading Sue's contribution:
Some patients do have reactions to fillers!. They tend to be hypersensitive to many ingredients!. That is fairly rare though!. In a pharmacy that dispenses 300+ prescriptions a day, I see that come up maybe once or twice a month!. If you have already taken your generic and are fine, then you don't have that problem!. For certain drugs, it also makes a difference!. For example, patients taking thyroid supplementatin should stick to whatever they were started on first be it the brand or the generic!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

There is a new ruling that has been bought out by most primary care trusts to make sure that GP's always prescribe the generic brand for the patient!. That way the cheapest available medication is given to you, and trusts are not having to pay extra just for a brand name!. The medication is EXACTLY the same, it's just that different pharmaceutical groups charge different prices!. This is called script switch, and now happens automatically when a computer is used to print out you prescription
You have nothing to worry about hon!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Most of the insurance companies demand that we take the generics!. They even have preferred generic manufacturers!.

Not all generics are created equal!! The main ingredient is the same, but the fillers are different!. Some of the fillers I cannot take!. So if you are allergic to some filler like sulfer, you must check with your pharmacist about this and he in turn will help you with getting a different manufacturer or you will have to transfer the Rx to a different pharmacy for a different manufacturer!. If this isn't good enough you need to have a talk with the doctor and get the name brand drug!.

Prescription insurance sometimes comes in tiers!. lowest cost to you is the generic!. next cost is their non prefered, and most expensive is the brand name drug!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

sometimes to save money the pharmacy or doctor will offer you a generic brand!. Its pretty much the same formula but the one with the brand name is uslally the intial company that developed the drug so you pay a bit more to pay them back for the money put into the research and development of the brand name drug,

If you dont notice any adverse side effects from the generic brand then in the long run it will save you money!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

all medicines are now a days named on their Pharmacological names (generic) and also by the companies that make them!. Each company have a different names and that is why they are called brand names and the other ones Generic name
Examples
Paracetamol is Generic name
Panadaol Paramol are Brand names
Antibiotic ZINACEF is Brand name for CEFUROXIME
which is Pharmacological name

I hope this will helpWww@Answer-Health@Com

Your pharmacist may change suppliers regularly to keep costs down!.
I get that all the time, however the medication will all ways be the right strength, just a different manufacturerWww@Answer-Health@Com

Something must have not been very appealing or marketable about the brand name drug!.

Brands sole purpose is to make the most profit!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Your pharmacy probably switched your prescription to a generic brand!. Call them up and have them switch back!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
