I have been a diabetic since I was 12, I'm 60 now!. Caffeine will most assuredly raise your glucose levels!. The only coffee I drink has to be decaffeinated!. Morning Thunder herbal tea is one of the worse herbal teas, because it has 3 times the amount of caffeine in it as a normal cup of coffee!.I only drink diet soda with no caffeine!. Carbs are not great on your system!. You have complex carbs and simple carbs!. Simple carbs are those loaded with sugar, such as most candy!.
Those of you who think caffeine is okay, have never faced a diabetic coma, been there, done that & it was no picnic!. Neither is insulin shock, too much insulin in the body, because you forgot to eat or didn't eat the right amount or type of food and your sugar dropped relatively fast and before you realized it was happening, you passed out!.
When your lips or gums start to tingle, reach for the Orange juice or a packet of sugar or some candy!. Follow this with a bite of protein so your sugar/glucose count will level off and not plunge down to the bottom again!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

If you have diabetes, however, you may wonder whether the caffeine in these and other products affects your health!.

Although moderate amounts of caffeine do not appear to be harmful to healthy individuals (in fact, research suggests that moderate coffee consumption may help prevent the development of type 2 diabetes), consuming large amounts of caffeine over a short period of time has been shown to raise blood glucose levels in people with diabetes!. A recent study suggests that consuming caffeine equal to that in about four cups of coffee may cause blood glucose levels to spike, particularly after meals!. Researchers speculate that caffeine may interfere with the process that moves glucose from the blood into muscle and other cells in the body where it is used for fuel!. Another reason for the increase in blood glucose may be that caffeine triggers the release of adrenaline, a hormone that releases stored sugar from the liver!.

Research is now being done on the effects of caffeine on diabetes, heart disease, cancer, fibrocystic breast disease, bone loss and metabolism (the rate at which the body burns calories)!. More research is needed before conclusions can be made!.

Here's what we do know: caffeine is one of the most widely used drugs!. Caffeine affects the nervous system, can make you feel more alert and causes a temporary rise in your blood pressure!. It passes from a pregnant woman to her developing baby and can be found in the breast milk of mothers who take in large amounts of caffeine!. Caffeine can lower the amount of iron absorbed by the body!. Caffeine is a diuretic, which means it can increase urine output beyond fluid intake, increasing the risk of dehydration!.

If you have diabetes, it is important to know that the side effects of consuming excessive caffeine can feel like high blood glucose (hyperglycemia) or low blood glucose (hypoglycemia)!. These side effects/symptoms include headaches, poor concentration, irritability and nervousness!. Limiting the amount of caffeine you consume can make it easier to read your body's symptoms of high and low blood glucose!. If you feel any of the above symptoms, don't assume they result from caffeine consumption: be sure to confirm that your blood glucose level is in your target range by testing with a blood glucose meter!.

Healthy adults should consume no more than 400 mg of caffeine per day (less for children and women of childbearing age)!. That's equivalent to about three 8-oz (237 ml) cups of brewed coffee!.
