Answers:
Hi There,

Terms:

LA: Left Atrium (Low Pressure System)
LV: Left Ventricle (High Pressure System)
EF: Ejection Fraction (Normal is 55-75%)!.
IAS: InterAtrial Septum
IVS: InterVentricular Septum
Note that IAS/IVS are congenital disorders (birth defects)!. In your case both are normal so no need to worry!.

Ok I'll go backwards to answer this question!. Yes you do have 2 abnormalities!.

Abnormality 1:
Your left atrium is dilated, this can be seen in a few diseases including atrial fibrilation (conduction problem of the heart) which can lead to enlargement (dilation)!. Another reason would be mitral valve stenosis (narrowing of the valve that connects the left atrium with the left ventricle)!. Mitral stenosis is discarded as a diagnosis due to the fact that your M-mode (Discussed further down) is normal!. Just for your information, the way mitral stenosis may lead to increased growth of the left atrium is the very fact that this low pressure system must overcome the valve and grows to compensate; I repeat this is not the case here!. It may also be due to ASH (discussed further down) which seems to be the case here!.

Abnormality 2:
There is evidence of ASH!. It goes by many names such as Idiopathic Hypertrophic Subaortic Stenosis (IHSS), Asymmetrical Septal Hypertrophy (ASH), or Hypertrophic Obstructive CardioMyopathy (HOCM)!. In your specific case, most physicians like to call it HCM (Hypertrophic CardioMyopathy) due to the fact that you have no outflow obstruction (Ejection Fraction/EF is within normal)!. Basically it is a hypertrophic cardiomyopathy which means that the walls that seperate the chambers of your heart have thickened (hypertrophied)!. This abnormality consist of genetically abnormal, usually hypercontractile and asymmetric myocardium!. Because of this thickening, the patient may present with something called CHF (Cardiac Heart Failure)!. Do not get afraid please!. Basically the heart cannot relax completely and thus filling is diminished!. A common symptom is pulmonary congestion!. One may even experience myocardial isquemia (lack of oxygen)!. Isquemia is what we call tissue with oxygen starvation; the tissue is choking, and wants more oxygen!. This may be seen even with normal coronary arteries!. The reason for this is due to the increased muscle mass (increased oxygen demand), elevated filling pressure etc!.

M-Mode is a single dimension image!.
Doppler: It's actually based on frequency and wavelength!. It uses reflected sound waves to evaluate blood as it flows through a blood vessel or between chambers!. Thus it shows the way blood is flowing from one chamber to another (atria to ventricle)!. It can also show if there is regurgitation (leaking of blood from the ventricle back to the atria)!.

I am sorry but the normal values in humans is variable dependent on age, height, weight etc!. But according to the report everything seems to be normal except what I pointed out!. I really hope this helps you out!. Do not forget to talk to your physician!. Good luck with everything!.

Daniel
