Do I NEED a...... TETANUS SHOT???!

A tetanus shot WILL NOT prevent gangrene which is caused by the pseudamonas bacteria, and I believe, others!. Tetanus shots, which yes, do require boosters about every 10 years to remain effective are useful ONLY against Tetanus!. Usually they are more indicated in a puncture wound, but I would waste NO time in going to an ER or my PCP if they (the wounds) were deep enough!. Because you were dealing w/ creek water, there may be a higher risk of infection (not necessarily by tetanus, either), so better safe than sorry!. What could happen!? You could be perfectly fine since the wounds bled profusely and cleaned themselves out and you injured yourself on rock (not a rusty nail or something like that), or you could get really sick, depending upon what was on the rocks and in the water, and how strong your immune system is!. That's a call for you (after speaking w/ the doctor) and your doctor to make!. Tetanus usually is more likely to be contracted from soil and dirt than it is water, and usually where there is farm animal waste in the soil, but NOT ALWAYS, so better safe than sorry, I say!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

For a minor injury - Get a tetanus shot if your last tetanus shot was over 10 years ago!.
For a complicated or contaminated wound (including puncture wounds) - Get a tetanus shot if your last tetanus shot was over 5 years ago!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
