My mother just had some tests done that tested for Casin intolerance and Gluten Intolerance!. Both tests came back positive in a way!.!. She is definatly Intolerant to Casin!.!. However the gluten test showed intolerance but she doesnt have Celiac Disease!. She carries 2 genes in her DNA that would most likely be passed to her children!. Resulting in them being possibly gluten intolerant!. My question is!.!.!. My mother has been heavy most of her life!.!. I have been overweight most of mine as well!. She has been to a nutritionist and works out on a regular basis through Cardiac rehab and Physical therapy and doesn't lose any weight!. Can Gluten Intolerance keep you from loosing weight or make you gain weight!? Also!.!.!. if Gluten intolerant, Can I eat brown rice!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
First, brown rice is fine!. We are talking wheat, barley, rye, spelt, triticale and anything derived or exposed to those things (think oatmeal, things made within 3 feet of gluten without precautions, cross contam!.,etc!.) or things that include gluten but you least expect it because they are grown or made with gluten ingredients (blue cheese, soy sauce, miso)!.
Has your mom had a endoscopy or is she IGA deficient!? Just wondering!. Depending on where you live, gluten intolerance IS celiac disease!. Sometimes all the different ways that it is described can be confusing!.
Yes, you can be a celiac and be overweight!. Mostly I feel because you are malnourished and overeating to get adequate nutrients at the expense of overeating, maybe!. Many opinions abound!.!.!. but after I have been glutened I get the "hungries" as I call them!.!.!. I usually take a vitamin pill (gf) to relieve it!. But gluten intolerance itself will not MAKE you gain or lose weight!. One possibilty is that it can do a number on your thyroid function, which can in turn, effect your weight!. So ask for a tsh during her next round of bloodwork!.

If your mom has the HLA-DQ genes, YOU MUST be tested for celiac!. Also, If she carries the HLA-DQ genes, then she probably either is gluten intolerant or at least gluten sensitive!.Her celiac just might not have been triggered yet!. I am a celiac, my brother and sis are non-celiac, but are NCGI/S!. They are also on a gf diet!. So if you mom is gluten sensitive but without the full antibody reaction, she MUST go gf to relieve her symptoms!.
Lactose and casein intolerance is not that uncommon for celiacs, especially those not on a gf diet (the tips of the villi where lactase is produced may be destroyed by wbc's)!. I hope her new lifestyle brings her health that she has not felt for years!
As for you, get tested and try going gf!. If you feel better with in a month, you have your answer! Good luck to you all!

EDIT!! IMPT! NO MISO unless specifically grown gf! It is grown on a wheat medium!.
Also ONLY REDBRIDGE by budwiser is GF, otherwise, it is TOTALLY off limits!.
