Sgpt levels?!

Question: Sgpt levels!?
Not really sure what any of this means, I tried researching on the internet, but no useful information comes up!.
My mom went to her doctor 2 weeks ago for difficulty breathing, the doc assumed she had asthma and prescribed her an inhaler!. The inhaler works-just not super well!. anyways she went back yesterday for another asthma check, and when she was there, the doc told her that one of the blood tests she had done at her visit 2 weeks prior, came back high!. it was the sgpt level, and it was 99!.
The doctor feels that the high levels has something to do with her heart and is refering her to a cardiologist for a stress-test!.
Everything I found on line says that when the levels are elevated it usually means liver problems!. My mom has a history of gallstones, and could that possibly be the reason for the elevated levels!? And if the doc thought it was something serious with her heart, she would not have sent her home and made the cardio appt!. for next week rite!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
Well, I worked in a lab for a lot of years and I cannot remember a time when a doctor referred a patient to a cardiologist for elevated liver enzymes!. I cannot imagine why her physician would suspect heart problems and not focus on the liver!. Here is a good link that explains exactly what AST and ALT (the more common terms used than SGPT and SGOT) actually mean!. As you will see, elevated SGPT (ALT) is found in liver disease!. I would have your mother call her doctor armed with this information and see why he believes the heart is/may be a problem!. If he cannot give a satisfactory answer, get another doctor!. Elevated ALT is not always indicative of serious liver disease - it may simply be from Tylenol usage!. The gall bladder does affect liver function, so that could be an issue, but it may be unrelated too!. Either way, she needs to be followed up by an internal medicine doc, instead of a cardiologist!. If her doctor has other reasons for the stress test, that is one thing, but if the abnormal liver function is the reason he wants it done, I believe I would look to another doctor!. Good luck and here is the link!.
