When he got to the ER was his heart still racing!?!? Did they do an EKG at the time!? It's possible that he has an arythmia of some sort that resolves itself and he didn't get there in time for them to see it happening!.

Do you ever take his pulse when it happens!? If so how fast is it!? He could possibly have Atrial fibrillation or supraventricular tachycardia, neither of which are life threatening so don't panic, but they could be diagnosed by doing an EKG at the time when he is experiencing the symptoms!.

Just read your additional details -

It doesn't sound like anxiety to me, not if its coming on so suddenly!. Unless of course your husband is under a lot of stress and he just doesn't realise how anxious he is about it!?

From what you've said I think there's a chance it might be SVT!. It's a really fast heart rate thats caused by extra electrical impulses that make the ventricles contract very quickly!. The trouble is because your heart rate is going so fast the waves on the EKG are very close together so it can be difficult to diagnose!. Also because it can resolve itself it can stop before you get to the hospital!. Did they docs try to give any explanation at all!?

Your husband should request that he be put on a halter monitor!. It's a litte device you wear for 24 hours or sometimes a whole week which records a tracing of your heart!. They're pretty discreet so he could go about his daily routine as normal!. Some record when they pick up something that isn't right, others need the user to press a button when they experience their symptoms!.

If he was to wear one of these you could be sure that the doctors would be able to see exactly what was going on when it happened and they would be able to make a better diagnosis!.

And no, neither SVT or AF would show up on an EKG after the symptoms had passed!. The EKG needs to be done while your husband's heart is racing!.

Good Luck!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Anxiety CAN just show up out of the blue!. This does not sound like anxiety though!. EMS probably saw the initial rhythm on their monitor, noticed an abnormality, and wanted him to go to the ED to get examined!. The rhythms explained to you in the previous answer may not last all that long, so by the time he got to the ED, the rhythm was probably gone!. I agree with the holter monitor for 24 hours!. That should catch any abnormality!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
