Why is my blood sugar higher in the morning than 2 hours after dinner?!

Question: Why is my blood sugar higher in the morning than 2 hours after dinner!?
I was diaganosed diabetic about 3 weeks ago!. I have been bery careful with my diet, eating very few carbs!. I've been eating loads more vegetables (though I've always eaten many), no bread or noodles (which I didn't actually eat much of before), or white rice!. In fact I doubt if I am eating even 100 g carbs a day and at least 30-40% is fiber!. I took my blood sugar 2 hours after dinner last at it was 130, I then took my meds 1500 g metamorfin & 15 g actos and went to bed!. I ate nothing after that!. My fasting blood sugar this morning was 135!. This is happening 3-4 times a week that my blood sugar is higher in the morning!. I follow the same routine nightly!. Any thoughts!? I am also gaining weight!. This is seriously upsetting me as I have lost 75 lbs in the past three years!. I haven't been eating more than 1600 calories a day and most days I am eating less!. And while I didn't expect to loose weight while readujsting my diet, I am very upset that I am gaining!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
Well, you're doing great on the less than a 100 carbs a day thing!. That is the way to good control!. And 135 isn't bad, but it is a little high for a fasting blood sugar!.

What's happening, is because you are type 2, your metabolism still is trying to do what it should, but your cells are insulin resistant and aren't letting it!.

Your metabolism is exhibiting what's called the Dawn Phenomena, where your liver gives you an extra boost of glucose in the morning so that you can go hunt or gather!. It's an evolutionary advantage leftover from before we had grocery stores!. It shows up in almost all mammals, but it's vestigial in humans because we have access to carbs 24/7 nowadays!.

But a rise of 5 points overnight is nothing!. There's always a 10% margin for error when you use home glucometers and even then, it's not really anything to worry about!. If the other times, the rise had been more drastic, like 20,30,40 points, then that's the Dawn Phenomena!. And I don't think you need to do anything about it, as your blood sugars aren't unhealthiliy high, just slightly elevated!. And you sound like you know what's going on otherwise, so I thinkn you should just not worry about it!.

However, if you want to do something about it, try upping your meds!.

It's called Dawn Phenomenon, and actually most people, diabetic or not, experience this!. But a non-diabetic's pancreas takes care of it, our doesn't!. It's due to the body's increase in production of Human Growth Hormone around 2-3am (times vary), and that hormone, like many others, causes a BG spike that sticks around until you wake up!. For those of us on a pump, we set up our pump settings to deliver more insulin to us from 2am - 7am or whatever times are needed!. For me, I have it set to give me almost a double dose during those hours!.!.!.that's how much it affects me!

And I hate to tell you, but part of why you lost that 75 pounds was your undiagnosed diabetes!. High blood sugar causes the body to munch away at your fat cells, so when you get back in control, most people (I did too) gain a few pounds!. You might want to try an eating plan like Weight Watchers or the South Beach Diet to help you trim a few pounds off!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I believe both of the previous answers are good but let me add, you should ask your doctor two things!. The first being tell him about you higher sugars in the a,!.m!., because you may need to eat protein at night to stablize your sugars or you may need higher dose of medication!. The second thing is that instead of a diet program such as Jenny Craig etc ask your doctor to send you to diabetic education classes!. The people are very well trained to take into account your weight, your blood sugar levels, and you aciivity level, and the amount of meds you on and figure out a personalized food program for you!. After I went to these classes I lost 116 pounds and have kept it off for 8 years, Also most insurances will pay for these classes with a doctors referral but they don't pay for Jenny Craig etc, which can get quite expensive!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
