Why does my blood clot when I donate blood?!

Question: Why does my blood clot when I donate blood!?
The last 2 times I have tried to donate blood my blood keeps clotting and I am unable to get a full bag so they can't use it!. I was told the first time (got maybe 1/2 bag) that I needed to drink more!. So I did and the 2nd time I made it about 3/4 of the bag and the vein dried up/clotted completely in the tube!.any help!?!?!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Although another poster mentioned anemia as a possible cause, blood donors must have a hematocrit (blood iron) of 38 or higher to donate!. Your hematocrit is checked via a fingerstick before you give blood!. Normal female HCT is 35-45, so if you were allowed to donate blood your HCT is fine!.

Dehydration can indeed cause this to happen, but usually not twice in a row!.

You don't mention your age, health status, or medications!. I see from a previous Question you have taken birth control pills for over 20 years and have just finished taking antibiotics for an infection!.

You may want to schedule an appointment with your physician and discuss with him/her what's happening when you donate blood!. The blood bank is not allowed to evaluate, diagnose, or even suggest that you might have a health problem, but the screening they provide can help you go to your physician for further help!.

I am a platelet donor and have been donating blood for 20+ years!. Please see your physician with this concern; there are many, many reasons your blood may be clotting improperly!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Because you are borderline iron deficency!.

Iron deficency test: Go to the mirror and pull your lower eyelid and see if the color is red or flesh color!. If its flesh colored you are lacking enough iron and should take a herbal iron like Floradix!. It will take a month to see a difference!. Iron carrys oxygen in your blood and if you dont have it you will feel tired, cold hands and feet, headaches, RLS, dull brittle hair, brittle nails, poor sleep, pale skin (see thru), shortness of breath, fatigue, poor concentration, low mood, ringing in the ears, irregular heart beats, cracks in the corner of the mouth, dizziness, fainting, sore tongue and canker sores!. Add b12 and folic acid for best resulWww@Answer-Health@Com

I'm with JT on this!. I also have problems with blood tests (i can't donate blood, but that would doubtless not work even if i could) because of my extreme platelet counts!. It can be, for many people, a completely natural and normal state, but for some, it can be a sign of serious myeloproliferative disorders!.

Please see a doctor!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
