Can I refuse Pre-Op Sedation since I'm being given General Anesthesia?!

Question: Can I refuse Pre-Op Sedation since I'm being given General Anesthesia!?
I'd like to be lucid and awake when I meet the medical staff that will be operating on me and NOT be in "LaLaLand!." and as odd as it sounds, I DO WANT to remember what happens to me!. (Amnesiacs give me the creeps!.!.!.!.I don't see any logical use for them for medical procedures unless the patient requests them!. I don't go for the euphemisisms like "oh it's just something to relax you" or "don't worry, you won't remember a thing!." Well SOME of us actually DO want to remember, care about, and want to know what's going on with our healthcare!.!.!.!.it's called being an Informed Consumer Patient!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
Yes, you can!.

The pre-op sedation is to make people less anxious before they go down to the operating room!. It does not serve to help the general anesthetic itself, and you will be at no increased risk by avoiding it!.

Where I work, we very rarely give pre-op sedation!. It is only used when patients are particularly anxious about their anesthesia/operation!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I don't blame you, and don't let anyone ever give you that evil poision drug called Versed!!!! That drug causes permanent brain damage!!!!!!!Www@Answer-Health@Com

You can refuse anything!. :) If you ask nicely, and explain that you had a bad experience with the drug before, then you won't get it!. It's as simple as that!.

I rarely give pre-op sedation, but I will give Versed as part of a general anesthetic!. If a patient has had trouble with it, I'll leave it out!. No big deal!.

Versed is a wonderful drug for MOST people, but not for everyone (just like EVERY OTHER DRUG - one size does not fit all!.)

In my experience of roughly 14,000 patients, MOST (but not all) patients want to be blissfully unaware!. A select few (myself included! but I'm weird like that) want to know what's going on!. I had a hysterectomy under spinal with no sedation, and chatted with my surgeon throughout the case!.

If you tell the nurses you're allergic to Versed, you definitely won't get any!. Just hope you don't end up on a ventilator long-term, though!.!.!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
