Answers:
I'm 20 and have a colostomy bag after surgery for colon cancer!. It's due to get reversed in a few weeks!. If it is strongly recommended by her docs, she should have one!.

I'm not going to lie, it is difficult to get used to and accept!. I was told by the surgeons that they would do their best for me not to have one, because I'm young, etc, so when I ended up having one it was truly a shock and very depressing!. When I first had it, I couldn't even look at the thing and really thought my life is over! But now it's literally like brushing your teeth, you just get on with it without thinking about it!. I wear almost anything I want, I go swimming, to the gym, etc!. Starting skydiving lessons soon! There is little you can't do with a bag!. And all I can say is if I was able to get used to it, anyone can!. I am the most squeemish person in the world, and care a lot about my appearance, so seriously, if I can do it, anyone can!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Sweetie, everyone reacts differently!. 2 months ago my brother was diagnosed and operated on for colon cancer to!. He is going through chemo now and afterwards will be given radiation!. My best girlfriend has it to and she was given 1 year to live and that was 4 years ago!. She wears a colosomy bag and it spread to her pelvic area and her treatment has stopped it in its tracks!. Both my brother and my best friend are getting treatment at Siteman Research Center In Missouri and they are great there!. It has a lot to do with a persons determination to live and they both say they are not giving up and going anywhere!. If the chemo keeps it at bay and things stay the way they are she says she can live with that!. Whatever your sister needs to do tell her to do it and fight with everything shes got!. Take care and I hope she is here for a long time!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

if your sister refuses because of cosmetic reasons:
More patients than ever are eligible for rectal cancer surgery that spares the sphincter, the muscle that opens and closes the rectum, thus reducing the likelihood of permanent colostomy to one patient in 10 or fewer!. thus the need for a long term bag diminished!.!. However, time is not known, because the human will often defeats science!.

my grandmother battled cancer for 9 years, when the docs said a few months, but my grandfather did 2 years, when the docs said 2 years!.!.!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I'm right there with you!. My Grandmother has had Cancer for 1 1/2 years!. chemo doesn't always work!. The cancer spread to alot of places!. tell her you won't force you but you just want to let you know that for all the good times and the bad times we had I'll always love youWww@Answer-Health@Com

She may not need to have a colostomy!.
You can have a good bit of colon removed and not the bag!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
