Question: What does an upper and a lower GI series consist of!?
A coworker of mine said she had to go for these tests due to stomach problems she's been experiencing!.
Is this where they have you drink like a gallon of that gross chalky tasting liquid barium then x-ray your stomach!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
I think the other answerers are confusing colonoscopy with UGI and BE barium studies!. For a UGI, the patient cannot eat or drink after midnight, but we don't use laxatives where I work as a prep for the UGI!. The UGI involves the patient drinking a barium mixture while the radiologist and radiologic technologist work together to take x-ray images of the esophagus, stomach and first part of the small intestines!.

A Lower GI series (called a BE or Barium Enema) consists of a two day prep, with the first day limiting the types of food you can eat and the second day actually using laxatives!. A enema tip, connected to a tube and bag of barium, is inserted into the rectum, and the radiologist and RT work together to take x-ray images of the colon!.

You can read a patient information page on UGIs here:

Absolutely!. Barium is something that helps "expose' the times they need to look at on the x-rays!.
They use a "camera" about the size of a small "snake"!. They "sedate" you but you are not "out" completely because they need to "cooperate" and help them by swallowing and doing a bit of participating in the procedure!. You can actually watch the procedure on the screen above you!. I've had several of these done!. The first is a bit more than uncomfortable but after that they are not so bad!. After you are finished you are rolled back to "recovery" for a few minutes, you get dressed and that is it!. The Dr!. will come in and talk to your about your results!. It is a fairly easy procedure to go through!.
The Lower GI Series is almost the same!. This time you drink another liquid that causes you to totally "empty" your bowels and colon before they begin!. They "lightly" sedate you and then place the camera into your "anus" and slowly work it as far as they need to!. You can watch it on the screen and they can describe what is being seen to help you understand the procedure!. The lower GI is quite a bit more uncomfortable than the upper GI!. After it is completed you will be wheeled to recovery, the Dr will come in and talk to you and you can go home!. Good luck!!!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Yes, I had both done recently!. The night before you have to drink a huge thing of nasty stuff to "Clean you out" So, you pretty much use the bathroom until its "Clear" Then you go to the hospital and they sedate you so you dont remember it and they run a tube down your throat and look around and then they look in your colon and afterwards I had to have a small intestine X ray so I had to drink a bottle of banana stuff and lay there for a hour for them to take x Rays!. It was NO fun whatsoever!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
