After Liver Transplant, What happens?!

Question: After Liver Transplant, What happens!?
My relative had two transplants 2 weeks ago!. She has recently got a shunt put back on for her kidneys!. Her red blood cell count was low but it has increased some after she recieved blood and plasma!. The tube was taken out of her mouth, but i think it was too early because she has trouble breathing!. Basically, how long will it take her to recover!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
Unfortunately, there is no cookie cutter answer when it comes to patient recovery, because each recipient and each donor organ is different!.

I am assuming that she had a liver and a kidney transplant, though it's a little vague!.

Taking the breathing tube out, despite the "trouble breathing", is probably in her best interests!. The "trouble breathing" might just be due to excess fluid accumulation!. Presumably she has "delayed graft function" which is why she needs dialysis to hold her over until the kidney can start doing its job!.

Much of the recovery process will hinge on how sick your relative was in the first place, in addition to the factors inherent to the organs being transplanted (length of time out of the body, functional status of the organs in the donor, etc)!.

Also critical are the donor-recipient cross matches, minor mismatches may or may not be of significance and only time will tell!. Any early rejection episodes will hamper the function of the newly transplanted organs as well!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Post transplant is a long road!. Many people are on medications (immunosuppressive) for years and may need particular diets as well!. Bottom line:It depends on what you mean by "recover"!. People with heart transplants do very poorly survival-wise, but liver and kidney do much better!. It's a life-changing event and certain things may never be the same!. That said, a certain level of normalcy can be achieved after a few months if the transplant is accepted and everything goes as intended!. Hope your relative is doing better!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
