There are generally three removal processes:

1) "Punch" procedure - they punch the birthmark out of your skin and remove it using a tool that takes out a "core" of tissue that includes the birthmark (and sometimes some skin surrounding the birthmark)!.
2) Shave the birthmark off the surface of your skin
3) Freeze the birthmark off

Chances are, it will hurt a little to have a birthmark removed!. The actual process won't hurt, but they will inject the area around the birthmark with something to numb the skin/nerves and that will sting/burn for a minute!. Afterwards, it may be sore, but nothing that a few Tylenol wouldn't take care of!.

Depending on the size of the birthmark and the procedure they use to remove it, they will probably use a few stitches and it will scar a little!. Use something like Polysporin to reduce scarring!. Stitches generally stay in for a couple of weeks!.

Cost - If you have insurance, it should cover it (minus a copay)!. You may need a referral from a family physician for your insurance, since some carriers won't cover you if you see a specialist without that referral!. Mine doesn't require a referral, so I can just make that appointment whenever I need to - yours may be the same way!. If you do not have insurance, call the dermatologist's office and they will give you a good estimate of the total expense!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

It will hurt but depending on the size and place they will either give you a local anaesthetic or knock you out completely!.

It probably will scar, definitely if there is stitching involved, but it will fade a bit eventually

Depending how big it is!. !. !. a week till stitches out maybe!.

If it is small it will probably be done under local, and will be charged by your doctor as minor surgery!.

Yes go to a doctor first! They are very helpful and a lot cheaper than dermatologists!Www@Answer-Health@Com

I was born with Sturge Webber Syndrome and have extensive birthmarks on the right side of my body!. I have had a great deal of success in lightening the marks on my face with various laser treatments!. The best doctor to go to for a consultation is Dr!. Don Groot in Edmonton, AB!. He is truly the best and will be very honest and upfront with you as to how he can help you!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
