Does anyone else experience problems with their thyroid meds?!

Question: Does anyone else experience problems with their thyroid meds!?
I have an under active thyroid and am on thyroxine and while it has given me more energy, I'm noticing some serious problems occurring over the last 12 months!.

My throat is constantly tight and my breathing is like that of a 40 a day smoker! (I don't smoke) I suffer panic attacks, palpitations and chest pains!. My dosage has been upped and downed and I'm now on 150mcg a day and my doc says this has brought me up to the required levels!. Also one doc thinks I need anti-depressants and another said I need tranquilisers!.!.!.!.I have to admit that my moods are pretty eratic too!. This is all so nuts as before I was diagnosed you'd be lucky to see me in the surgery once a year! if that!.!.!.

I suppose I'm just wondering if there is anyone else out there with the same concerns!.

Thanks in advance!. xxWww@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
Levothyroxine, a thyroid hormone, is used to treat hypothyroidism, a condition where the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone!. Without this hormone, the body cannot function properly, resulting in poor growth, slow speech, lack of energy, weight gain, hair loss, dry thick skin, and increased sensitivity to cold!. When taken correctly, levothyroxine reverses these symptoms!. Levothyroxine is also used to treat congenital hypothyroidism (cretinism) and goiter (enlarged thyroid gland)!.
Levothyroxine may cause side effects!. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:
* weight loss
* tremor
* headache
* upset stomach
* vomiting
* diarrhea
* stomach cramps
* nervousness
* irritability
* insomnia
* excessive sweating
* increased appetite
* fever
* changes in menstrual cycle
* sensitivity to heat
* temporary hair loss, particularly in children during the first month of therapy
If you experience either of the following symptoms, call your doctor immediately:
* chest pain (angina)
* rapid or irregular heartbeat or pulseWww@Answer-Health@Com

Your symptoms may not be related to your thyroid, as the symptoms you mention would be from a hyperactive thyroid not under!. You might need to consider some other doctors, although it may not be easy for them to figure out either!. You may also consider a different medication!. You did not mention if you were on synthroid, levothyroixine, a generic, armour, etc!. You may be sensitive to the one your on!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I had the panic attacks,sleepless nights, and also suffered with depression and terrible mood swings because my thyroxine dose was too low!. I had my thyroid removed due to cancer 9 years ago and I am on 200mg a day and I have to have my levels checked regularly!. thankfully for me and my family now that my levels have now evened out everything is back to normal!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

wow!150 mcg is high for just an underactive thyroid,not full-blown hypothyroidism!.im underactive and take a mere 50 mcg to control it,which it does very well!.everyones different of course,but the symptoms u describe are typical of too high thyroid meds!.u need a more competant and knowledgable endocrinologist!.i really believe as both a patient and former nurse,the dosage may be too high-especially because of the heart palpitations-a classic symptom of too elevated dosage!good luck!Www@Answer-Health@Com

yes my uncle & grandmaWww@Answer-Health@Com

I have had good luck with my medications: Synthroid (T4) & Cytomel (T3)!. My MD wasn't sure I could convert the Synthroid to T3!.!.!.that helped a lot!. I was on 150mcg at one time!.!.!.now I'm then went to 100mcg>>88mcg & now 75mcg!.
I take 10 mcg of Cytomel 2X/day!.

Make sure when the MD takes your thyroid levels you get him to take ALL of them, not just the TSH!. You also need Free T4; Free T3; Calculated T4; & Calculated T3 taken!.

As people have said, your symptoms sound more like hyperthyroid!.!.!.have you lost weight too!?

I also suggest you get your heart checked out if it hasn't already been!.

Depression & anxiety often accompany underactive thyroid so you might try an antidepressant that also helps with anxiety, like Lexapro, Wellbutrin, Zoloft, Cymbalta!. Go to a psychiatrist to get these meds prescribed!.

Good luck to you!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
