GERD/Hilateral Hernia?!

Question: GERD/Hilateral Hernia!?
Are GERD and Hilateral Hernia's genetic!? My dad and grandma both had the hernia's and my dad has GERD too!. I'm a 27 yr old female, lately I've been feeling like there is something stuck in my throat and sometimes when I swallow foods, it almost tries to kick it back out, but that only happens occasionally!. More recently I have developed a discomfort in my stomach just above my belly button!. Not to be gross, but I also burp a lot, especially after I eat and in the mornings!. Does this sound like the beginnings of a hernia or GERD, acid reflux!?!?!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
You may want to check your spelling -- I think you mean "hiatus hernia" (or "bilateral hernia", although hiatus makes more sense)!.

In our body, a thin layer of muscle called diaphragm separates the chest from the abdomen!. Normally, our stomach is located in the abdomen, and is connected to the mouth through a swallowing tube called esophagus!.

Hiatus hernia is a condition where part of the stomach pokes through the opening in the diaphragm, and ends up in the chest: http://www!.badgut!.com/index!.php!?contentF!.!.!.

Because of this, acid (and "burp gas") can come up the esophagus more easily, leading to the symptoms you described!.

Is hiatus hernia genetic!?
Although there is something called "familial hiatus hernia", most cases of hiatus hernia are isolated, meaning that it's simply a coincidence that your dad and grandma both have the condition!.

However, some factors like obesity can make hiatus hernia and GERD worse, and we know obesity can certainly run in the family!.

Anyway, neither hiatus hernia nor GERD is considered a dangerous condition (as long as you take medications to control acid secretion), but if the symptoms are really bothering, you can ask your doctor to refer you to a general surgeon to see if corrective surgery is right for you!.

Good luck!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
