Do people end up in wheel chair because of diabetic neuropathy, or can the medic!

Question: Do people end up in wheel chair because of diabetic neuropathy, or can the medication control it!?
Answers:
Medication can help some, but does not reverse the condition!. Yes, I have met people that have to use a wheelchair or walker because their neuropathy is so bad!. These are people that have their disease under control now, but did have periods where they were not in such great control!. Having high blood sugar for long periods of time can do more damage and make neuropathy a lot worse and sensation and feeling can be lost, which makes it very difficult to walk!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Diabetics, no matter which type, have nerve damage due to the way their body reacts to lots of things!. Prior to 20 years ago, there was no way to tell how high glucose levels were!. The little pee test on the strip only told if it was over 350 the day before!! Obviously that was not much help!. Insulin dosage was guessed at!.

The greatest advantage people now have is the personal glucometers!. We can now keep very tight control of our glucose levels, so there should be much less of the periferal neuropathy crippling and maiming people!.

There are other reasons for people to have neuropathy than diabetes, but most have a combination of factors!. One of these is thyroid diseases!. It takes a toll on nerve endings too, by way of making glucose control almost impossible!.

Pain medications may and may not help, but diabetic meds will not control any of it!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Maturity onset Diabetes can be managed through a healthy lifestyle, which includes regular exercise, low GI diet, no smoking, very low alcohol consumption and a loving relationship!. Diabetes can effect your blood vessels and especially your peripheral nerves which may be the cause of your wheel chair concern!. The medication can not control the nerve damage!. The person must live a healthy life, low cholesterol and low sugar diets!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

You most of the time have to ammputate since there is so much nerve damage!. Diabetic Neuropathy is caused from poor control and poor treatment!. People usually end up w/ Neuropathy being on MDI's and the condition worsens!. Pump therapy has been proven to help Neuropathy and stabilize it!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

If they end up in a wheelchair it is because they have lost toes or feet due to undetected injury!.

Most of the time, people with diabetic neuropathy lose vibratory and pain sensation in the extremities due to the effects of high blood glucose on the nerves!. Little nerves, like the ones that supply sensation in the extremities, tend to be effected first!. The better the blood sugar is controlled through diet, exercise, medication and insulin, the less likely someone is to develop neuropathy in the first place!. Once neuropathy occurs there are a number of things that can be done!. First and foremost, diabetics must be taught to check their feet!. People with neuropathy can sometimes get a small cut or injury that can get infected!. Because they cannot feel their feet as well, the infection can get very progressed before it is noted, sometimes resulting in an infection so severe that all that can be done is to amputate the toe, etc!.!. The best way to prevent this is to check the feet so that little cuts are caught early and appropriately treated!.

If the neuropathy is causing pain, medications like Cymbalta or Neurontin can be used to assist with diminishing this!. They won't regain sensation but it should help decrease any pain associated from the neuropathy alone!.

If someone ends up in a wheelchair, it is highly unlikely it is due strictly from neuropathy!. Diabetics are more likely to have strokes which can cause weakness in the legs but again, this is not the classic diabetic neuropathy!. Bottom line is the best thing to do is to control blood sugars and to check your feet everyday!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
