Lupus is a chronic, inflammatory, autoimmune disease!.
Chronic meaning it never goes away!. Inflammatory meaning it causes inflammation (swelling) in the body which causes damage and pain if left untreated!. Autoimmune meaning that the body attacks its own healthy cells and tissue!.
The cause is not known!. There is no cure!. Researchers believe that one must have a genetic predisposition and then something to trigger the lupus!. There are many cases of identical twins where one develops lupus and the other does not!. (You can read about this in "The Autoimmune Connection" by Dr!. Jill Buyon)!. It is not hereditary like sickle cell!.
