Cancer that 'runs in families' is actually quite rare!. In fact no more than 10% of cancer cases are due to hereditary factors, the rest are random and nobody knows what causes most of them!.
There are some faulty cancer genes that have been identified, but these are rare!. BRCA1 and BRCA2 , the faulty genes responsible for hereditary breast cancer, are examples!. Only 5 -10% of breast cancer cases are hereditary; if a parent has one of these genes there is a 50% chance that their child will inherit it, but inheriting it doesn't mean they will definitely get breast cancer!. That's how rare hereditary breast cancer is, though many people persist in believing most breast cancer is hereditary!.
I'm sorry your mother has cancer; if you can say what type of cancer she has, it will be easier to explain to what degree, if any, it can be hereditary!.
Two of my grandparents died of cancer!. Both my parents had cancer, and my mother died of it!. All their cancers were non-hereditary!. Of my parents six children, now aged 46 - 60, only I have developed cancer, and mine too was non=hereditary and unconnected to any family history - random, like most cancersWww@Answer-Health@Com

People whose family members have experienced cancer such as ovarion, colon and breast cancer are more prone to getting it themselves!. Other types of cancer are caused by the environment - e!.g!., a person who smokes may contract lung cancer!. And the reason for other types of cancer are unknown!. The bottom line is, anyone can get cancer for any number of reasons, and the cause can sometimes be identified and other times it cannot!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
Here's what we don't know!. Why can some people smoke like freight trains, drink like fish and eat, well you get my point!. We blame it on genetics but that can be crap as well!.
There are genes that give you a "predisposition" to certain diseases or cancers but that's no guarantee that you will get them!. It's still truly a crap shoot!.

Cancer genes can be hereditary, however that does not exclude anybody who's family has not had it!. Cancer is non discrimanatory, it will kill anyone!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
