When my boyfriend went through his bone marrow transplant i asked that very same question to one of his doctors!. here is what he said:

Bone Marrow is the stem cells that are produced inside your bones!. Most people's bodies produce stem cells effciently but leukemia attacks the production line and makes bone marrow effectivly redundant or in some cases it deteriorates!. In order for a leukemia sufferers body to start to heal itself it needs to be persuaded or stimulated into producing health stem cells again!. The best way to do this is to take some healthy stem cells (bone marow) from a closly matched donor
(usually a sibling) by drilling into their bone and extracting bone marrow (the healthy persons body will jsut regenerate much like giving blood) and inject those healthy cells into the patients bone!.
Imagine the bone was a person, when they inject the healthy bone marrow into it its like saying to the bone, this is what you should be doing and making, take these healthy cells and build on them and start making more!. If sucessful the body makes healthy, cancer free, bone marrow and the pateint recovers!.
Its scarey for the doner and the reciever, its painful but it has a good sucess rate in adults and its worth it!.
If you have a family or friend going through this my heart goes out to you because honey I know exactly how you feel!.
My boyfrinds bone marrow translpant was a success, he beat the cancer but his body was too tired and it gave up when he was in last stretch of the race!.
all the best!. xWww@Answer-Health@Com

Bone marrow transplantation involves extracting bone marrow containing normal stem cells from a healthy donor, and transferring it to a recipient whose body cannot manufacture proper quantities of normal blood cells!. The goal of the transplant is to rebuild the recipient's blood cells and immune system and hopefully cure the underlying ailment!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

One step everyone has failed to mention!. Before transfusing the new bone marrow, they administer extremely HIGH doses of chemotherapy to kill the patient's own bone marrow!. This is a very dangerous time for the patient, as they have no immune system at all!. Patient can become very ill during this time and are often confined to the hospital in clean-room conditions!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
