Question: What happens to a baby after a mom who is insulin dependent gives birth!?!?
I want to hear from Type 1 Diabetic moms, who have given birth, because I want to know what to expect when my daugher has her baby in a few weeks!. She is Type 1, insulin dependent and I know the baby will be monitored closely, but for how long!?!? Will she have to monitor him once he gets home from the hospital!?!?!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
I have type 2 but had to be on insulin while pregnant since oral meds are not safe during pregnancy!.

The baby will go to the NICU for 24 hours!.
This is to check for LOW blood sugars!.The baby will have her sugar checked via her heal every hour or so!.
The baby has been making insulin already and has been putting out a lot to try and lower her high sugar that she was living in i!.e!. your daughter!.Even a very closely monitored mom cannot have a sugar as low as a person without diabetes!.
The baby will continue to put out high levels of insulin for about 24 hours!.
If the baby does have low sugar they will either give sugar through a IV or sugar water!.Ask your pediatrician for details !.
Good luck and congratulations all around !Www@Answer-Health@Com

If your daughter maintained her sugars well, then the baby should be fine!. They may do a fingerstick on the baby post-birth because if your daughter needs a lot of insulin units to keep her sugars under control, the baby can get hypoglycemic after birth, but it should start to regulate it's sugars shortly thereafter!. Sometimes, it's little pancreas kicks out high amounts of insulin in relation to your daughter's blood sugars and after birth the sugars are cut off (from the umbilical cord) but the insulin levels in it's blood are still high!.

The baby should be fine within a few hours if not a day and should be fine by the time they get home!.

I have been a diabetic type i, for 21 years, I have a son whose now 6, he is monitored annually for the presence of cells that could attack the pancreas!. But until now everything has gone fine, he is a perfectly normal child, I try to maintain him in activities, he does TKD, so he keeps exercising!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

depending on the type of insulin your daughter takes, it would say for example, if it were lantus, which lasts twenty four hours, they would monitor the baby for at least that long and administer glucose through and i!.v!. to normalize the babies blood sugar!.

you really should ask the obgyn about this, or the nurse practitioner in charge!. don't go by ya!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Once she gets here they know you are diabetic they will check her for high glucose levels and go from there GOOD LUCK CONGRATSWww@Answer-Health@Com
