Answers:
HCV (Hepatitis C Virus) can take up to 40 years to destroy your liver!. However, it can also do it in less than 10 years!.

Now about a liver biopsy
Why the Test is Performed
The biopsy helps diagnose a number of liver diseases !. The procedure also helps in the assessment of the stage (early, advanced) of liver disease !. This is especially important in hepatitis C infection!.

In addition, the biopsy helps detect:

cancer
infections
the cause of an unexplained enlargement of the liver
abnormal levels of liver enzymes that have been detected in blood tests

What Abnormal Results Mean
The biopsy may reveal a number of liver diseases such as cirrhosis , hepatitis , or infections such as tuberculosis !. It may also indicate cancer !.

Additional conditions under which the test may be performed:

Alcoholic liver disease (hepatitis/cirrhosis)
Amebic liver abscess
Autoimmune hepatitis
Biliary atresia
Chronic active hepatitis
Chronic persistent hepatitis
Disseminated coccidioidomycosis;
Hemochromatosis
Hepatitis C
Hepatitis D
Hepatocellular carcinoma
Hodgkin's lymphoma
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease
Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma
Primary biliary cirrhosis
Pyogenic liver abscess
Reye syndrome
Sclerosing cholangitis
Wilson's disease

I have had HCV for many years, probably less than 20!. The only times I have had a biopsy was so that my doctor could see the progresstion of the virus and what damage had been done!. I was on the liver transplant list for 4 years!. During that time, I could not drink alcohol and I was randomly tested!. Because HCV is in the blood and the blood is filtered by the liver, the liver becomes unable to do it's job!. Drinking alcohol makes it even harder for a damaged liver!.

A liver biopsy was never mandatory for me!. Generally no one forces adults to take care of their health!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
