Answers:
I have been a type 2 diabetic for 11 years!. For the first 4 years or so I was able to control it entirely through diet and exercise!. Then I got pregnant!.!.!.during pregnancy I needed insulin, and by the end I was taking 21 shots a day of 3 types of insulin!. After the baby was born (healthy!) I could go down on my insulin, but I never got back to where I was before when I could control it through diet alone, even though I had lost the pregnancy weight and additional weight!. Pregnancy had just changed my endocrine system too much!.

When I was done nursing, I had a new doctor who convinced me to stop insulin and go back to 2 oral drugs - Avandia and Actos!. I was on these drugs for about a year and a half and by the end I gained weight very quickly, like 30 pounds in one month! I found a new doctor and told her I didn't mind taking insulin but I would not take either of those drugs!.

This is where I am now:

Metformin 1000 mg 2x day
Lantus, 14 units

I lost all the weight I'd gained on Actos/Avandia!. I don't think I will be able to go down any further on my meds just from weight loss or diet!.

Oddly, I'm pregnant now and I need less medication than when I wasn't pregnant!. I'm taking the same amount of metformin but had to go down on the Lantus to 10 units!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I started with glyburide and metformin combo, changed to only the metformin when the insurance refused to pay for the combo tablet!. Don't know why the doctor dropped the glyburide!.

Type 2 diabetes is a progressive disorder or disease how ever you choose to look at it!. It does its own thing in each of our bodies as it feels like doing no matter how careful we may be to control it!.

So then I progressed to taking long acting insulin, then added some instant acting insulin for some meals!.

I still have to have the metformin to help with the usage of the insulins and to help control the livers actions as well!.

The insulins have to be adjusted about every 6 months!. and we just increased the amount of Metformin too!.

glucophage/metformin has nothing to do with lowering glucose levels at all!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I'm a type II diabetic and Dr wanted to put me on Glucophage but I bought the book "The Sugar Buster's" and was able to lower my levels a great deal and didn't need the medication!. I still follow the program to date and maintain great levels!. You should look into it , it may do the same for you!. It has helped many people!. My doctor was amazed with the results I got from it and implemented it within his practice to all diabetic patients!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I currently take:
Lantis (35 units)
Humalog (sliding scale)
Glipizide (5 mg)
Metformin (2000 mg)

Metformin has gone up, Glipizide has gone down, and at one point I took Byetta!. I stopped taking Byetta because I had a reaction to it!. It made me sick whenever I took it!. As soon as I saw the doctor they told me to stop taking it as it can cause Pancratitus!. It also caused my father to need his gall bladder taken out!. All in all I have taken the same meds!. I just started taking insulin in January!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Right now I'm only taking Byetta injections!. My insurance co!. stopped covering my Avandia, so Doc put me on glucophage!. I couldn't take it because it dropped my sugar way too low (30s-ish) more than once!. I was scared and sick and stopped taking it!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Insulin 3 times a day with meals!.
Lantus at night!.
Glucophage 1,000 mg twice a day!.
Simlyn 3 times a day with meals!.

The Simlyn is new!. I've lost 10 pounds using it!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I was taking Metformin up until last December!. I quit when I found out that diet and exercise could do a better job!. I have more energy now, than I did two years before I was diagnosed!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

MetforminXR and actos!. My husband is type two and takes insulin!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
