Katy, your question is good, but the answer is not always simple or easy to accept!. Avoiding unprotected sex has two goals!. One is to keep you from getting pregnant when you don't want that to happen!. The other is to avoid or reduce your chances of getting an STD!. It also depends upon which STD you mean!.
In the worst case, if he has the HIV virus and doesn't even know it, he could easily pass it on to you with a pregnancy that easily allows the HIV virus to pass from the mother to the baby inside who is then born with a fatal infection and may well die of AIDS in a couple of years!. If you know he had HIV then you should not plan to have children with him - EVER !
If he has other STDs like syphilis or gonorrhea, he could be treated and cured so that you and any babies would be healthy!.
Sexually active people, unless they are both virgins, should be screened yearly for STDs!. However, the screening does NOT really screen for all possible STDs!. Thus, there is always some risk!. Even condoms and birth control pills will not prevent all STDs and all chances of pregnancy!. Some gamble is always involved, but may be worth the risk!. You decide!. It's your life!. Be careful!. Enjoy a safe or safer sexually active life if that is your desire!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

There are tests that people can take (blood tests) at the doctors which tell you if a person has any STDs!. Ask them if they have been tested before you have sex with them!. Then ask to see the peice of paper that has the results!. You have be careful these days who you have sex with, even protected sex because you are never fully protected!. And when you decide to have kids, make sure it is with someone you trust and love!. They have to be faithful!.

HPV is detected by abnormal pap smears in girls, but may also go undetected, and is very common!.

Be safe, always use a condom, and make sure you see someone's test results!. Oral sex isn't safe either it spreads aids and other things!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

WELL IF YOU GET TREATED FOR STDS THAN YOU CAN GET RID OF THEM,HOWEVER YOU CAN NOT GET RID OF HPV,HERPES, OR AIDS!. TO GET AND STD TEST THE DOCTOR WILL DO SOMETHING SIMILAR TO A PEP SMEAR FOR A GUY THEY WILL PUT A CU TIP DOWN HIS PENIS,AND OFCORSE AN AIDS TEST IS A BLOODTESTWww@Answer-Health@Com
