Answers:
E!. coli bacteria live in the lower intestines of all mammals!. They are part of the normal flora of the intestines!. Intestinal bacteria aid in digestion and form about 1/3 of the volume of the stool!.
There are a few strains of e!. coli which cause food poisoning in people!. And the bad one called serotype 0157:H7 has been deadly in some cases!. Even normal healthy e!. coli is often the cause of minor infection in the vagina; this is why females are told to wipe backward, not forward, after a b!.m!., to keep the stool away from the vaginal opening!.
E!. coli contamination of vegetables comes from animal feces in the field; water may wash the bacteria into the vegetable field!. E!. coli contamination of meat occurs during the butchering process!.
E!. coli bacteria are killed by cooking!. Since the bacteria are only on the surface of the meat, this isn't usually a problem except with ground meat, where the bacteria are mixed through it!. Of course the biggest problem is with foods that are eaten raw!. To rely on washing the contaminated food is to take a chance!.
Not all humans who consume the hazardous e!. coli get sick or produce symptoms!. More often, the morbific bacteria are present in the colon for a few weeks, then they are gone!. During this time, of course, the stool contains the bacteria, so it is especially important to wash hands after the bathroom, in order not to pass it on to somebody more vulnerable!.
Food workers and teachers with the bad strain will not automatically spread the bacteria, as long as they wash their hands!. But young children are not so reliable, and if they are found to have the bacterial strain, with or without symptoms, they are generally taken out of school until it is gone!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

The E stands for Escherichia, so named after Theodor Escherich, a nineteenth century microbiologist and pediatrician who discovered this bacteria!. The "coli" means that it resides in the colon of many species of animals, both warm and cold blooded!. (Wikipedia says only warm blooded, but I disagree!.) Most strains of E!. coli are not harmful, but are an indicator of fecal contamination of food or water!. Then there are the enteropathogenic strains such as O157:H11 that cause disease!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
