Answers:
That type of feeling is very characteristic for premature ventricular contractions (PVC's)!. Your heart's primary pacemaker is called the sinus node and has a vast array of back-up pacemakers in case this fails!. PVC's are when one of the ventricular nodes become irritable, maybe because of deoxygenation, stress, caffeine intake or one of manifold other things and the ventricles (two lower chambers of the heart) contract without having had the atria contract first!.

PVC's are generally benign, but in very rare cases can cause dangerous arrythmias such as ventricular tachycardia!. You're doing the right thing getting it checked out, but in the mean time, limit caffeine intake and if you smoke, try to stop!.
