Question: In the film "Rain Man," does Raymond have HFA (High Functioning Autism)!?
Just wondering fo' my course paper, just wanting to get my facts straighttttWww@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
No high functioning autism is someone who can function in society but have autism!. Rainman was an autistic savante!. He was also a pretty cool guy that I would love to throw a few cold ones down with!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

The type of autism "rain man" had, was introvert autism as opposed to extrovert autism!. Introver autism looks on the outside (behavior) as "classic" autism, but is in fact a person with autism who is an introver just as there are introverts among the neurotypicals!.
A person with extaverted autism, will seem "less autistic" and more functional because of his extaverted character and personality!. He is never-the-less, still autistic!. This type of autistic is ofte thought as a high functioning autistic or an Asperger!. Let's not forget that these medical/scientific terms where coined by neyrotypicals who have no idea (still after 20 so years) what autism really is, and have never considered the possibility that autism, just as neurotypicality, has both an introverted and an extravertred human type!.

How typical of science to assume wrong (again!.!.!.)Www@Answer-Health@Com

Even those with high functioning autism (Asperger's syndrome) find it difficult and sometimes impossible to truly function in society!. The character Raymond was autistic and a savant!. Exactly how severe his autism is is never clarified!. But it isn't the most severe and he doesn't have Asperger's!. HFA is an informal term applied to those who still have some abilities!. It's not a recognized diagnostic term!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

In the film "RainMan" - you must really remember - Raymond was confined to an institution at an early age - and not a thing was done with him!. The care givers merely "managed" him!. When he was travelling with his brother Charley - he was able to change, or grow and expand!. -Didn't have to wear K-mart underwear anymore for example!. Raymond - with early childhood intervention - could quite possibly be living independently as an adult!. Instead - upon return to the institution - Raymond went right back to his former rigid routine!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I think he has what's commonly called "full-blown autism!." He can't live on his own!. He can't work or love!. That is the final definition of all mental illness!.

If you want to get an idea of how difficult your question is to answer, take a look at the following website:

http://www!.answers!.com/topic/autism!?cat=!.!.!.

There is no false information listed there, but there is contradicting information! You should read every entry from start to finish!. Then you can decide whether or not figuring out a clear definition of autism is like playing three-dimensional chess!. There seems to be psychological elements, physical elements and genetic elements all in play simultaneously and all reinforcing each other!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

IMO, having worked with autistic children, I would say no based on the fact that he does not have adequate communication skills to convey his needs!. But I would need to read a full case history before drawing a final conclusion!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
