What these others have forgotten to mention, is that if you donate actual marrow, you are going to be under general anesthesia!. Some donors do an epidural, either way, you wont be feeling any pain!.

However, most of the time, peripheral blood stem cells are used today!. They are harvested using a aphersis machine!.!.!. this is the same process as selling plasma or some red cross donations!. Its not painful minus being stuck with a couple needles in the arms!. One needle pulls your blood into the aphersis machine, it goes through a centrifuse to pull out the stem cells (they are a type of white blood cell) and then the rest of your blood goes through a warmer and back into your body!. No big deal!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I have been part of the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) Registry for about 15 years!. I was called once and told I was a possible match for someone, but they needed to do further blood tests to determine if I would be a good match!. I wasn't!. I haven't heard from the registry again!.
It is not at all likely that you would be a match for your friend, but anyone can join the registry!. I did it at the blood center where I donate blood!.
I sibling would be the most likely candidate to be a bone marrow donor!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I have never done it but i know about it!. there is a blood test to determine if you are a match!. The actual procedure is very painful, it involved a removal of bone marrow (which is if you don't know in on the inside of bones)!. They take it usually from the hip so you lay down and the put a needle into your hip, into the bone and draw the marrow from there!.

It is awesome that you want to be a donor, if you don't do it/ can't, i suggest donating blood!. It is a simpler procedure but still needed badly!. Only about 5% elidgable to donate do, and they are always in need!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Bone marrow is usually collected with a large-bore syringe that has a special tip to get through the bone without causing damage!. Usually, the marrow is collected in the pelvis, near the hip!. The area is first numbed with a local anesthetic, so the procedure itself doesn't hurt, but the general area where the marrow is removed gets sore for a week or two!. The pain is similar to having a bad bruise!. Matches are determined by blood type!. There's more complete info at th link:Www@Answer-Health@Com
