Can PCOS disappear if you treat it, lose weight and excercise regularly?!

Question: Can PCOS disappear if you treat it, lose weight and excercise regularly!?
I was diagnosed with PCOS a year ago through blood work!. I lost 25 pounds and now exercise regularly!. I went to a specialist recently and he said I do not have PCOS by looking at my ovaries on a sonogram!. Have I put the PCOS into "remission" or is that possible!? Or, did I just not have it to begin with!? I am confused!Www@Answer-Health@Com

It sounds like you are confused because you first had blood work diagnosing you with PCOS, yet a recent sonogram shows you that you do not have PCOS!.

To answer your question, it is very likely that you have PCOS!. What your doctor should have explained to you is that although you do not have cysts on your ovaries, it does not indicate that you do not have PCOS!. (The name PCOS is confusing and misleading that way!) Blood work is typically more conclusive for diagnosing PCOS than a sonogram!. This is because to have PCOS there are many hormones that are at abnormal levels which your blood work will show!. Again, not having polycystic ovaries present does not mean you do not have PCOS!. Likewise, women with cysts on the ovaries do not necessarily have PCOS!.

Hallmark symptoms of PCOS are: abnormal menstrual cycles, weight gain/obesity, higher testosterone levels, insulin resistance, high cholesterol levels, in addition to external symptoms like acanthosis nigrican (dark skin patches), skin tags, and excess body/facial hair!. Not treating these symptoms can lead to heart disease, obesity, stroke, and infertility!. Blood work can indicate the extent of these symptoms!.

PCOS cannot ever be in "remission"!. This is because PCOS is not a disease, but rather a set of complex symptoms in a response to a metabolic disorder!. Researchers do not know exactly what causes the metabolic disruptions, so therefore it has been difficult to find a cure or a treatment for the root causes of PCOS!. Women with PCOS are told to treat the symptoms by losing weight, exercising, eating a healthy dietcutting simple carbs, and/or taking medications!. So because you have done exactly this, you are taking control of the PCOS symptoms, rather than exacerbating them!. Yet at the same time, the root causes are still present and cannot disappear!.

In the beginning your blood work did indicate PCOS!.!.!. what you have done is taken good care of yourself by controlling those symptoms from worsening!. You aren't in "remission" but you are taking care of your future health by "beating" PCOS! Congratulations and best wishes!Www@Answer-Health@Com

PCOS is not something that can "disappear"!. Losing weight and taking a medicine such as Glucophage (Metformin) can definitely help prevent cysts from growing on your ovaries!. You may have never had PCOS to begin with, but if it was blood tests that determined you had it, its likely that you do!. I would maybe seek a second opinion!. In either case, it would be good to know definitively whether or not you actually have the syndrome!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
