I have personal experience with this!. Unfortunately - it wasn't a positive experience!.

In 2004 I had a lumpectomy and radiation treatments on my right breast!.

In 2007 I had a recurrence of cancer in the same breast and had a mastectomy!. Our first attempt at reconstruction was with a tissue expander and implants!.

Unfortunately, I developed a severe staph infection and the tissue was not healing (due primarily to the weakness of the tissue from the radiation in 2004)!. I had to have the expander removed in another surgery and wait for complete healing of the mastectomy site before I could again try reconstruction!.

Several months later I returned to the hospital for reconstruction - this time we had to do a procedure that involved taking healthy tissue from elsewhere!. I had the Latissimus flap reconstruction done (this where they take muscle and tissue from the back and use it to form a pocket into which a breast implant can be placed)!.

This reconstruction has been a success!. It takes awhile for the implant to settle in and look right under clothes or feel right in a bra - but I've been back in a bathing suit this summer - so it's done well!.

Hope that helps!.

A friend of mine had reconstructive surgery (implants) at the same time as the mastectomy!. Then she had radiation!. The radiation caused her implants to harden so she had to have surgery again to replace the implants!. It is all fine now, she looks great!. You should have a better outcome having the implants after radiation!.
Good luck!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
