Dear Angelia,

Cytomel, is a synthetic form of T3, i!.e!., triiodothyronine, the active, potent agent, regulating cellular metabolism!. However, only 20% of the total T3 produced in the body, is produced in the thyroid!. The other 80%, is produced in various other organs, e!.g!., brain, liver, kidneys!. Regardless, of where produced, it is formed by deiodiating T4, i!.e!., tetraiodothyronine, also known as thyroxine!.

My thoughts are, if thyroid function is low, i!.e!., there is a shortage of T4, to convert to T3, then T4 should be supplemented, e!.g!., Synthroid!. Also, if T4 is low, I would explore iodine supplementation!. Many of us, have greatly reduced salt intake, and are no longer getting the potassium iodide, that is added to iodized salt!.

If T4 levels are okay, and T3 levels are low, it may be due to low selenium levels in your diet!. The enzyme, that deiodiates T4, to T3 requires selenium, in its molecular structure, in order for it to function properly!. The best food source, of Selenium is Brazil nuts!. Two nuts per day, may keep depression away!.

Regardless, I encourage you to take the Cytomel; if nothing else, it is a good test!. It may very well alleviate your depression!. However, I would get to the biochemical root of the problem, i!.e!., determine why the Cytomel worked, and deal with it!.

I considered taking Cytomel for depression, and fibromyalgia symptoms!. However, I opted for selenium supplementation!. It worked for the muscle pain!. I am not so sure about the depression!.

Please, don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions!. Depression is something, I am always doing research on!. It helps with the depression!.

I wish you the best,
