It can be hereditary, or can be caused by other factors such as :
-Tobacco smoking and heavy alcohol consumption
-Chronic irritation of the mucosal lining
-Plummer-Vinson syndrome (PVS)
-Swallowing sodium hydroxide(substances that contain it)
Smoking only does so little unless you've been smoking for at least more than 20 years( I would know because a family member has been smoking for more than 30 years)!.
You would be lucky to even have the chance to get a voice box if you have throat cancer!.
Depending on the size of the tumor can be be curable or not!.
