Answers:
A murmur is an extra or louder sound of blood flow when the heart is listened to via a stethoscope!.

Murmurs can be caused by a number of things
1!. Simply accelerated flow through the heart because the heart is pumping strongly!. This does not cause a problem!.
2!. A murmur can be caused by a valve leaking!. This is called regurgitation!. This can range from trivial to severe!. Most people have at least one trivial to mild leak!.
3!. A murmur can also be caused by a narrowed valve, called stenosis!. Again this can range from mild to severe!.
4!. A murmur can be caused by a hole in the heart which allows flow of blood between the right and left side of the heart!. These holes can range from small to large!.

An experienced doctor can often tell from the nature and timing of the murmur and also from the history of the patient, what the nature and significance of the murmur is!.

A patient may be referred for an echocardiogram!.!.!.this is an ultrasound test of the heart which looks at the chambers, valves and blood flow within the heart!. In the vast majority of cases this will rpofide a definitive answer!.

The important and reassuring thing to remember is that the majority of murmurs turn out to be of no concern!. In cases of mild to moderate narrowings or leaks the clinical situation remains stable for a long period of time but may require follow-up!.

Even when there is a hole in the heart in childhoood, these can often close as the heart grows!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Heart murmurs in children are very often referred to as "innocent" and disappear by adulthood!. But they can be an indication of something else such as a heart valve problem!.
