The bad news - there really isn't a whole lot that you can reasonably do!. People will tell you to use barrier methods - but that seems like overkill to me!.
The good news!. Almost everyone has oral herpes anyway!. 50% to 80% of adults have it - they usually catch it in childhood from kissing relatives!. It's not even considered a sexually transmitted disease!.
More good news!. Between hetero couples, if they never ever had sex when the infected partner was having an outbreak, they had a transmission rate of genital herpes was about 2% per year!. I've got to believe it to be less for lesbians!.
A suggestion!. Don't wait until you're in the middle of sex to tell someone that you have a sexually transmitted disease!. You're right!. It's a mood killer!. It also implies that you were about to put them at risk for the disease!. I would make a point of first reading up on genital herpes as much as possible so that you can answer any questions that your GF may have, and telling her at some point before you get intimate!. Don't make a huge deal about it - but do let her know!. You can take that opportunity to ask her about her most recent test results!.
The best place I know to learn more about herpes, by the way, is the website below!. It will give you RELIABLE information (unlike some folks on Y!A)!.
And while people sometime talk about having a "mild case" of herpes, thats sort of like being a little bit pregnant or half-dead!. You either have herpes - and can spread it to other people - or you don't!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
