I believe you mean a "lymph node!."
The lymph node is a tiny bean-shaped gland, located in many different areas of the body!. The main locations are the neck, under the arms, and in the groin!. The body has over 300 nodes, filtering scertain white blood cells and foreign elements!. The lymph node is a component of the lymphatic system!. The lymphatic system moves lymph node fluid, waste substance, and nutrients through out your body bloodstream and tissues!.

Each lymph node is also an important part of your immune system!. Your lymph node filters fluids, catching viruses, bacteria, and other unknown materials!. Then your unique white blood cells destroy the unwanted materials!.

A lymph node may be found alone or in a group through out your body!. The main groups can be felt in the neck, under the arms, and in the groin!. Normally, a healthy lymph node is not sensitive or sore to touch!. Children between the ages of 10 to 12 years old usually have larger lymph nodes, which can be twice the normal size, compared to adults !.

Neck Lymph Node
These are found on either side of the neck, behind your ears, or under your chin!.

Painful lymph node
Placing a heating pad (on low) or a warm towel on your painful lymph node may reduce the soreness!. It may have negative effects so use with caution!.

A swollen lymph node typically is caused by an infection that your lymph node is destroying!. A slight enlargement and softness means the swollen lymph node is succeeding in the tough battle!. It is severely infected when the swollen lymph node enlarges more than 1 inch across!. If your swollen lymph node is over 2 inches across or the covering skin is pink, unfortunately it is losing in the tough battle!. You should contact your health professional immediately!.

A swollen lymph node not returning to normal size, which is about 1/3 inch across, after a month should be checked by a health professional!.

A swollen lymph node can be felt in the neck, underarm, or inn the groin!. The following could be some causes of swollen neck lymph node as a possible symptom!.

Throat infection
Tonsillitis
Ear infection
Skin infection
Hodgkins Disease
A swollen neck lymph node can be related to a swollen tonsil!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

It's actually called a lymph node!.

American Heritage Dictionary:
lymph node
n!. Any of the small bodies located along the lymphatic vessels, particularly at the neck, armpit, and groin, that filter bacteria and foreign particles from lymph fluid!. During infection, lymph nodes may become swollen with activated lymphocytes!. Also called lymph gland!.

You might want to have it checked out if it doesn't go away in a couple of days!. While the lymph node in itself is not a problem, it does indicate that you probably have an infection!. It may be something that can and/or should be treated!.

It could also be nothing!. One of my sons actually has a couple of enlarged lymph nodes - they're always sticking out of his neck!. They've been checked out, and it turns out that he just has big lymph nodes!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

This is tissue relating to the lymphatic system!. A thin yellowish fluid called lymph fluid travels through the body!.
The Lymphatic system helps to control the fluid in the body!.
But a lump behind your ear, could be a furuncle, or an infected lymph node!. have you tried antibiotic ointment on it!. You see the lymph node behind the ear is the postauricular lymph node, it drains the auditory meatus, the pina and the scalp!. If you have used antibiotic ointment on it and it is still there, I would see your doctor or go to a free clinic!. Usually with antibiotic ointment they go away by themselves!.(this is for the people who have behind ear lymph nodes) Now yours is under your chin, do you need a root canal on a tooth, or could you have an infected tooth!. I think I would see doctor about this one due to the placement, antibiotic cream will not help in this spot!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

are u sure its not a lymph node!? a lymph node is a part of the lymphatic system and helps filter out foriegn particles and contain whit blood cells!. they are important to proper functioning of the immune system!. it would be a good idea to have it checked out because they get inflamed when there are problems!. i hope this helps a littleWww@Answer-Health@Com
