Answers:
The most characteristic appearance of psoriasis is a fine, silvery scale over a red, slightly raised area!. The margins of each lesion are well-defined, it does not gradually blur into the normal skin around it!. The scale is firmly attached to the underlying skin and if you pull a scale off, it might cause bleeding!. Classic psoriasis affects the "extensor surfaces" (like the outside of the elbow and front of the knee) more than the opposite side of the joint, but can appear anywhere!.

There are a lot of variations of the disease that can be confused with other skin problems!. Small "icepick" dents in the nails and raised nails that look like they have fungus would greatly increase the likelihood that this is psoriasis, as would joint pain and stiffness in the knuckles closest to the hand (especially in the morning!.) An experienced physician can recognize psoriasis at a glance!. If your disease looks like the classic form in Habif or other dermatology books, you can also be pretty sure!. If there is any doubt, a small biopsy looked at by a dermatologic pathologist will remove any doubt!. A pathologist who does not specialize in skin will not have the experience to reliably diagnose skin diseases in a biopsy however!.

There are great treatments available for psoriasis now, but all are by prescription!. Because psoriasis is a systemic disease, it is important to treat it aggressively, not just to deal with the skin problem!. Www@Answer-Health@Com

Psoriasis appears as silver-to gray-scaled red patches on various parts of the body!. The elbows, knees, trunk and scalp are the most common sites for flare-ups!. Fingernails are often affected, causing the nails to split, discolor, pit and separate from the bed!. Www@Answer-Health@Com
