Cancer and Cord Blood transplant questions.!

Question: Cancer and Cord Blood transplant questions!.
I am doing research and finding a little more details about cord blood transplant!. Please answer whatever questions you can even if you can't answer them all!. Also if you have any good websites that answer questions or allow you to ask questions, that would be helpful!.

1!. After a cord blood transplant, if the patient is male and the blood that is used is female, will the patient
Answers:
1!. Yes, but thats with any hematopoetic stem cell transplant, regardless of the source, cord blood, marrow, or peripheral blood stem cells!. I am female, but if you test my blood, it will show a male as my cord blood donor was male!.
THe blood type can change, but its not just if you use blood type!. Stem cell transplant donors are not matched by blood type, but by HLA (human leukocyte antigen) tissue type!. So it is very possible that the donor could be a different blood type than the patient!. Since the transplant is replacing the bone marrow, the stem cells that make the person's blood, they will make cells that are the same type as they are!. I was o+ before my transplant!. My donor is a+, and I am now a+

2!. Yes, very very very weak!. To prepare your body for the transplant, the patient goes through high dose chemo and full body irradiation (radiation called irradiation because it is irradicating the existing marrow)!. Stem cell transplants are done on a day calender!. I started at day -10!. I had 5 days of days of radiation, my chemo started on day -6, 5 days of chemo (chemo and rad overlapped)!. Day 0 was rest, and day 1 was when the new stem cells were infused!. All that chemo and radiation kills the current marrow, so that it is possible for the new cells to engraft!.
It lasts for a while!. I was in the hospital for 6 weeks, pretty miserable!. I am just a lil over 1 year out, and am still fatigued!. The worst part is the first 3-4 months!.

3!. A ton of meds!. For the first year, most patients are going to be taking high dose anti biotics, anti virals, anti fungals as prophalactic means to prevent infection!. Immunosupression and to prevent graft v host disease!. Steroids to help with the gvhd and to increase apetite!. Vitamins!. And then I was on anti depressants, several anti enemics (I have had a hard time with nausea) antacids!. I also had to take potassium and magnesium supplements!. Most stem cell transplant patients are able to come off most of the meds at one year!. I am having problems coming off the immunosupressants!. For a while we took me off the actual immunosupressants and was using steroids!. But, Im having a lot of problems with the steroids, so I am cutting back the steroids and going back to immunosuppresant!. I have skin gvhd, which is why I am having problems!. Not all patients do though!. Most patients are able to be medication free at about a year, or a lil later!.

4!. Infections is the number one risk!. Especially during the transplant while waiting for the cells to engraft, and after with all the immunosuppression!. I have been in the hospital 4 times since transplant because of infections!. And with being in the hospital so much, I am now mrsa colonized!. Which means anytime I get an infection, I have to go in and get all kinds of cultures and if the infection is mrsa, I have to be locked up for 2 weeks while they give me antibiotics that I am allergic to!. Lots of fun!. lol!. Chances are though, you may get mrsa with being in the hospital so much, so be aware of that!.
Fatigue is HUGE!. In the first few months, I couldnt walk more than 5-10 mins at a time!. I couldnt do mine own shopping!. I stayed in bed most of the time!. All the materials will tell you to expect to be out of work for atleast a year, and I can say that is definatly accurate!. I am going to start classes in 2 weeks, so we will see how that goes!. I tried to work in January, at 6 months because I was bored, but it was way too soon!. I didnt even make it 2 days and I got myself put back in the hospital!.

5!. Not to my knowledge!. However, it would be of utmost importance that all of your doctors be aware of the disease, the transplant and current medications!. Very important that they know!. But, x-rays on your hip bone will show where the bone has been chipped and drilled into from bone marrow biopsies!.
They will be able to identify you as a stem cell transplant patient, however if they dna test both your blood and from another source such as hair or cheeck swab!. All transplant patients are chimeras, so your blood, just the same as it has the same type and sex as the donor, will have the same dna!. For interesting pop culture, stem cell transplant patients have been featured in many crime shows such as law and order and csi where the criminal has had one!. The blood evidence at the scene doesnt match the cheeck swab they take for comparison, so the bad guy almost gets away!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Clarification: She mentioned Infection as a complication!. And in other places: graft versus host disease, and failure to engraft!. They are all 3 complications, just in case you are not putting them in that category!.
