Question: If someone is allergic to cats and dogs, will they be allergic to a guinea pig as well!?
Answers:
Not necessarily!. What causes an allergic reaction in humans is a protein found in the urine, saliva, and glands of cats, dogs, and other mammals!. The protein is specific to each species!. In other works, you can be allergic to cats but not dogs, dogs but not horses!. Allergy is caused by a defect in the immune system where these harmless proteins (such as the Fel d1 protein in cats) are misidentified as germs!. The only way to attack the allergy is to prevent exposure to the protein!. The good news is that proteins can be denatured by the application of extreme heat, acids, or alkalis!. There is a company called Allerpet that makes this stuff you rub on your critters once a week to remove that allergen!. My daughter used to use the Allerpet/Cat solution on her hamsters and it took care of the allergen and didn't hurt the hamsters!. It should be safe for guinea pigs since they are a little bigger!. I'll give you a link to check it out!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
