Question: When a doctor asks you to say "99" while checking for phenomena!?
what does that do!? Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
This is a test for what we call "whispered pectoriloquy"!. What the doctor is listening for is an increase in volume over areas of the lung that are no longer air-filled either due to an infection like pneumonia or from something solid like cancer!. Sound travels more effectively through liquid or solid and so whispers that are barely heard over other parts of the chest sound louder over such areas of disease!. Why exactly we say "ninety-nine" is beyond me (although they address it in the wiki article), they just taught us to do that in medical school!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

It originated as a joke (below)
Prostate Exam:

A man goes to his doctor for his physical and gets sent to the Urologist as a precaution!. When he gets there, he discovers the Urologist is a very pretty female doctor!.

The female doctor says, "I'm going to check your prostate today, but this new procedure is a little different from what you are probably used to!. I want you to lie on your right side, bend your knees, then while I check your prostate, take a deep breath and say, 99!."

The guy obeys and says, 99! The doctor says, "Great!. Now turn over on your left side and again, while I repeat the check, take a deep breath and say, 99!."

Again, the guy says, "99"!.

The doctor said, 'Very good!. Now then, I want you to lie on your back with your knees raised slightly!. I'm going to check your prostate with this hand, and with the other hand I'm going to hold on to your private part!. Now take a deep breath and say, 99!.

The guy begins, "One!.!.!. Two!.!.!. Three!.!.!."Www@Answer-Health@Com

Phenomena!? Do you mean pneumonia!?

I don't know what saying ninety-nine has to do with it, but would guess that the resonance of the 'N's make your chest make some noise that makes the disease easier to diagnose!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
