Question: What is a hodgkins disease and its diffrene in a non hodgkins lymphoma
Answers:
There are two major kinds of lymphoma!. Lymphoma simply means cancer of the lymph nodes!. The two kinds are known as Hodgkin's Disease (or Hodgkin Lymphoma) and Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma!. Both HD and N-HL involve uncontrolled cell growth in the lymphatic system!. Hodgkin's Disease is diagnosed by the presence of a kind of cancer cell called a Reed-Sternberg cell!. People with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma do not have Reed-Sternberg cells!. It is the Reed-Sternberg cells that determine whether you have Hodgkin's or Non-Hodgkin's!.

Hodgkin's Disease was "discovered" as far back as the 1600s, but was first described by Dr!. Thomas Hodgkin in the 1830s!. It got named after him!. Later, scientists were able to isolate the Reed-Sternberg cell!. That's when they were able to tell N-HL from HD!.

Hodgkin's Disease most commonly affects younger people, but it's uncommon (about 8,000 cases per year)!. Non-Hodgkin lymphoma is much more common (about 65,000 cases per year), but there are many different subtypes of N-HL!. N-HL is more commonly found among older people!.

Both Hodgkin's and Non-Hodgkin's cause many of the same symptoms, including a painlessly enlarged lymph node(s), weight loss, fevers, and night sweats!. Hodgkin's Disease is known specifically for causing itching and pain when drinking alcohol!. Both HD and N-HL are treated similarly, usually with either chemotherapy alone or a combination of radiation and chemotherapy!. The drug regimens vary depending on the type of disease!.

With N-HL, doctors differentiate between aggressive and indolent (slow-growing)!. There is no such distinction with Hodgkin's Disease!.

Left untreated, both N-HL and HD are fatal!. However, both enjoy pretty good rates of cure!. The cure rate in general is somewhat higher with HD, although it is difficult to generalize because some types of N-HL have a very good prognosis too!. With both HD and N-HL prognosis depends on stage and presence of symptoms!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
