Your brother, like every other babyhad a shunt called foreman ovale, which left a hole on the inside of his heart mixing two different types of blood!. Oxygenated and deoxygenated!. This hole would have been in the center of his heart and never fully closed in developement!. The mixed blood was then pumped into his body, still delivering some oxygen, but not enough to survive a long period of time!. This I've seen a lot of on the maternity floor, because a lot of ppl don't know there is a problem until the baby is born, because while inside the womb, the baby receives the mother's oxygen!. It isn't until that baby is born that tey notice a problem, but some can be corrected!. I've seen surgery performed on babies less than 24 hours old because of heart defects!. The doctors may have not noticed a problem right away because your brother was getting just enough oxygen at first to breathe!. The should've listened closer to his heart because there is a distictive galloping sound when babies shunts do not close!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

From your information, it could be countless things!.!. I'll explain the most common one, but, like I said!.!. It could be something else!.
Your heart has four chambers!.!. There is a "wall" in between your two biggest chambers - left & right ventricles, because one contains oxygenated blood and one contains deoxygenated blood, which obv!. cannot mix!. Sometimes babies are born with a hole in this "wall"!. This causes the oxygenated blood to mix with deoxygenated blood, which is then pumped to the body!. Since there is not very much oxygen, the body eventually becomes so oxygen deprived it shuts down!. This explains why he lived for 12 days - his organs/muscles had some oxygen from when he was in your Mom, and the little bit he was getting was enough to sustain him for a while (the 12 days), but he could not function any long being so oxygen deprived!.
As I said, one of the most common heart problems with babies, but may or may not be what your brother had!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

The hart is a ball of muscle with 4 chambers the functioning of each chamber and all the valves is vital for a healthy life!. The fact that your brother lasted 12 days shows how much we all want to live!. It also points out how little we can fix if there are problems with really young babies!. Prolonging the life of your brother was obviously not possible and this has left both you and your family with a loss that cannot be replaced!. Using forums like this allows other people provide there input!. I am sure you will find an answer to your question by study on the working of the human hart and when you have an understanding of what goes on explain it to your mum!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
